According to legend, the huge ice-carved hollow of the Poisoned Glen got its name when the king of the Formorians, the one-eyed giant Balor, was killed here by a spear thrown by his exiled grandson, Lughaidh. As the evil king fell, venom from Balor’s eye poured out and poisoned the glen.

As an avowed atheist, I have an inexplicable love of gospel music and temples. And chief amongst temples is the Bayon, part of the Angkor complex in Cambodia. Built in the 12th century, it's hard to put into words the magnificence of the craftsmanship on display.

The last state temple of the Khmer Empire, Bayon is situated in the exact centre of the Great Temple City of Angkor, where its 54 towers are adorned with 216 enormous, hauntingly beautiful stone faces.

I first visited Angkor in 2017 and following a big afternoon storm, found myself alone in the Bayon, apart from a cat that shared my lunch and pushed her way into most of my photos.

As we ate my sandwiches under the smiling face of the god-king Jayavarman VII, it was hard not to be overwhelmed by the majesty of the place.

A few months ago, I headed to Efate, an island in the Vanuatu archipelago, in search of a lost World War II airplane. Locals said it crashed in a mangrove swamp off the north coast, so we packed our gear, saddled up the horses and set off.

I first met my guide Tom when I visited his village ten years ago. I love this photograph but not half as much as he did!

Hanoi's Old Quarter is made up of 36 ancient, chaotic streets. Shops and stalls pour onto pavements, scooters swarm from hidden alleyways and vendors whip up fresh grub in front of weathered colonial-era houses.

Hanoi is also home to the cheapest beer in the world (less the 50 cents) and egg coffee from Cafe Giang. What more do you need?

In the misty Hoang Lien Mountains, in the furthest reaches of the Himalayas, lies the town of Sapa, home of the Mountain Hmong ethnic group. The Hmong women are known for their vibrant indigo-dyed h**p textiles, decorated with intricate batik patterns.
