Glorious day on Sydney Harbour for the start of the 2026 Noakes Group Gold Coast Race.

Mind you, at sunrise the temperatures were so low that only the penguins seemed to be enjoying themselves. Thankfully, things improved quickly, delivering postcard-perfect conditions and even a little more breeze than expected.

I said a little... don't start looking for survival conditions just yet. 😄

This one is shaping up to be a tactical race, where the navigators might just earn their keep.

Well... there's a first time for everything, and apparently I've just ticked another one off the bucket list... my first-ever album cover! 🎉

The legendary Australian band The Allniters has released a double album, and somehow they trusted yours truly with the cover image. Either they have impeccable taste, or they desperately needed glasses... I'm choosing to believe it's the first one.

After photographing boats, portraits, landscapes and just about everything else over the years, seeing one of my images wrapped around an album feels pretty special.

When I first met Sarah, it was in my little studio, and she had just started a new relationship. You didn’t need Sherlock Holmes to work that one out. The smile gave it away long before she said a word. But beyond the obvious happiness, what really stood out was her humanity. It seemed to pour out of every pore. Some people simply make a room feel lighter by walking into it, and Sarah has that rare gift in abundance.

There’s something about people who are always smiling—it’s contagious (the good kind, not the "stay home for five days" variety). Steph is one of those rare humans who can find something to smile about no matter what. I’m convinced she wakes up in a good mood just to annoy the rest of us. I do envy that superpower sometimes, but spending time around someone with that kind of positive energy is a pretty good way to borrow a little of it.

If you looked up "enthusiasm" in the dictionary, there'd probably be a photo of Megan smiling back at you. I've seen her arrive from an international flight, race home just long enough to change clothes, jump on her bike, and then turn up at an event as if she'd just had a week's holiday. Even more impressive is her ability to switch from work mode to fun mode faster than a light switch. If enthusiasm were an Olympic sport, she'd be standing on the podium wondering what everyone else had been doing.

Before every portrait session, there's almost a guarantee someone will say, "I hate having my picture taken." If I earned a dollar every time I heard that, I'd have retired years ago.

Casey was no exception.

The breakthrough came when I asked her to look away and think about something for a moment. That's when the magic happened.

As always, it's all about timing. Sometimes the best portrait happens in the split second between trying too hard and forgetting the camera is even there.

Another small milestone overnight for my ongoing series on D***s on Bikes. It’s been a fascinating project, filled with incredible characters, powerful stories and more personality per square metre than should be legally allowed. One frame at a time, the collection keeps growing, and so does my appreciation for this remarkable community.

This morning, walking to the yacht club, I was immediately alarmed. After yesterday’s glassy, mirror-like conditions, there were no reflections on the water. None. The surface was covered in strange little wrinkles. Had the harbour finally reached middle age? Then it hit me... wind! Actual wind! (well lets not get too excited it was 10 knots but better then previous days!)

For the final day of AWKR, the weather gods remembered sailing involves sails. Champagne conditions, crisp winter light, and colours popping everywhere. A perfect finish to another cracking regatta. No reflections were harmed in the making of today’s racing.
