Skógafoss is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, with a vertical drop of 60 metres. The water cascades from former sea cliffs that marked Iceland’s coastline thousands of years ago, before the landscape rose and the shoreline receded. The waterfall produces a constant spray, which forms a rainbow on sunny days, as can be faintly seen in this image.

👀🌠Shooting star spotted at Cathedral Rocks!

I went back to this location a few weeks ago to reshoot the eastern rise of the Milky Way from Cathedral Rocks cave with a different lens, the Nikon Z 20mm f1.8 (versus the Samyang 14mm f2.8 from the previous shoot). The slightly longer focal length gives a noticeably different perspective from inside the cave. I had to back further into the cave to fit the cave opening inside the frame with the 20mm which gives a smaller/flatter view of the sky versus the larger and more vertical view with the 14mm. The longer focal length also changes the positioning of Cathedral Rock itself, with it appearing smaller and more isolated/centered with the 14mm versus larger and more off to the edge and obscured by the foreground with the 20mm. The tide and swell was also lower and was not flowing into the cave like it was last time so I was able to stay dry and capture some reflections in the foreground!

This image was taken 21 minutes after the previous one I posted a week ago. I returned to my original composition inside the cave, using my 14mm lens to look out onto the coal loader and capture the sun rising above the horizon. Compared to my previous image, the direct light from the sun creates stronger highlights and shadows, giving it more depth.

My take on that really nice sunrise we had on Saturday morning: Some high clouds to the east lit up about 50 minutes before sunrise. A few minutes after I took this image, I witnessed a massive humpback whale breach the water's surface and do a backflip. Can't ask for much more than that! 🤩🐋

I recently entered a photography competition and one of my all time favourite images won a silver award and was placed in the top 20 for the "Revealing Nature" category.

I spotted this lonely bull standing by itself on the side of the road during a winter cold front in the Blue Mountains which brought along frosty conditions and snow. After checking if he was okay, I retrieved my camera from under my jacket and captured this portrait.

You can checkout the other top 20 images from the competition here: https://www.betterphotographyphotocomp.com/index.php/previous-years/2024-winners/141-2024nature
