One of the most incredible bird behaviour experiences on my Channel Country tour in May was watching Straw-necked Ibis catching fish.
The real drama was the competition that followed. Other ibis would rush in to steal a successful catch, while Black Kites would swoop down, talons blazing, trying to sn**ch the fish for themselves.
If an ibis took to the air to escape the mob on the ground, it would quickly drop its prey, rather than risk tangling with the Black Kites’ incredible aerial agility.
If they did take flight it all happened in a blur and I rarely saw the fish being dropped with my eyes, so my only hope was to point in the right direction and hold the shutter down! And of course make sure I had the fastest shutter speed possible - in this case 1/4000th.
What’s the most chaotic bird behaviour you’ve ever witnessed?

Can’t wait to be back in China next April for our Flock Wildlife Photo Tours China Pheasants and Red Panda tour!
Still a couple of spots left if you want to see these actual birds yourself ❤️💛🧡🩵💙

Great Egrets
A bit of a high key edit from my Channel Country tour back in May taken amidst the chaos of action at the old Diamantina River Crossing near Birdsville .
It was incredible seeing so many birds in one place.

Gang-gang 🩶❤️
Definitely one of the world’s best birds!

Had a fun but quick visit to Canberra checking some locations for upcoming tours and can’t resist checking in on these guys.
Dramatic early morning light as these two males squabbled for food.
I might try to do a little reel of my 24 hour jaunt. But not tonight.

Finches.
A few shots from near Katherine last year of some great birds with some great people Simon Cotterell and Marc Gardner.
I really liked the way the Gouldians in the first shot matched the colour tones of the leaves.
A great little waterhole found by chance. Just wish we weren’t limited for time that morning and couldn’t spend longer.
1. Gouldian Finch
2. Masked Finch
3. Yellow-tinted Honeyeater, Long-tailed and Masked Finches
4. Gouldian Finch and Peaceful Dove

Nice to get out last week to see these two raptors close to home which is unusual. Especially the Brahminy Kite.
Always happy to shoot into the light when I have a dark background too. Just need to remember to dial your exposure down so that you don’t blow out the highlights.
In any auto mode the camera will be tricked by the dark background and want to let too much light in.

Golden-shouldered Parrot.
Looking forward to getting up north in a few months and trying for more shots of this endangered beauty.
Huge props to Sue and Tom Shephard at Artemis Station in Cape York and more recently Conservation Partners for all their hard work helping this species 🙏💪

I drove a long way to see Letter-winged Kites (amongst other birds) in far western Queensland recently on our Channel Country tour.
That morning alone I drove 150km on remote dirt roads to be there in the early morning.
Such a thrill to see this species which are largely nocturnal and hunt their main prey (native Long-haired Rats) at night.
