Water Python (Liasis fuscus)
I was hoping to find a nice looking Water this trip to update my pics. After flipping a small juvenile and not seeing any others for days, I was starting to think I wouldn’t get the chance. It wasn’t until our last night in the area that this cracker made an appearance. So much love for Water Pythons, especially these nice QLD animals.

How stunning are these golden Common Tree Snakes (Dendrelaphis punctulatus) from Cape York?!
This was one of a few similar looking animals we saw motoring across the open, burnt woodlands. While the golden colour form is more often associated with the Top End of the NT and WA, these Cape York goldens are seriously underrated!

A true gem of the rainforest!
Green Pythons are found in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Australia. In Aus, they’re restricted to a small patch of rainforest in coastal Cape York. In this area, they’re surprisingly abundant and it’s very easy to see a handful in just a few hours!
One thing I noticed on this recent trip is that all the Greens we saw were on the skinnier side. The cyclone that hit the region earlier this year probably contributed to this. That said though, these snakes are very resilient and this is all a part of the lifestyle they’re suited to living. I’m sure a good start to the wet season will get them putting on the size again in no time.

Have you ever seen so many Orange-eyed Tree Frogs (Chlorohyla chloris)?
While spotlighting in the SEQ rainforest after a heavy downpour, we came across a short stretch that had dozens of these frogs calling and breeding in the roadside verges. The warm, humid weather triggered their breeding and they were making the most of it!

Common Mist Frogs (Mosyleia rheocola)
Despite cool, dry weather, the Mist Frogs remained calling on the recent visit. This species is known to call and breed year round, even when conditions are poor.
Like a few of the other species that breed in the rapids, rheocola taddies have large mouths to help grip onto the rocks and avoid being flushed downstream. They’re one of several range restricted frogs that inhabit these streams - all of which are heavily threatened by chytrid fungus.

Flipping an adult Greater Black Whip Snake (Demansia papuensis) under some tin in Cape York!
One of the most alert and fast moving snakes in Australia that are most commonly found in the dry Savannah across northern Australia. They have a strong venom for a Demansia and that aids in immobilising the lizards they predominately feed on.
Pretty stoked with this find!
