Photo and a Story: To distract you from all the bad news we are inundated with, I'm going to post an image and a story each day from some wonderful places around the globe.

Today's image: Vesak Festival Hupatale, Sri Lanka. 2002. Fuji Velvia 50

This festival marks the birth, enlightenment and passing away into Nirvana of the Lord Buddha.

I had hired a car and travelled as much around Sri Lanka as possible, this was the era that the Tamil Tigers pretty much rendered most of the North East as extremely dangerous. One night I strayed too far into this section of Sri Lanka and was held up at gunpoint while many angry men surrounded and rocked the car.

In the end Im sure they just thought I was an idiot who couldn't read a map and sent me on my way. Driving full of adrenaline throughout the night I ended up in Hupatale. After a much contrasted peaceful day strolling through tea plantations, the evening brought on the Festivities of Vesak.

I love this photo because it shows the simple joy of families embracing the light, colours and ethos of Vesak. As only one of a handful of foreigners, I am still yet to experience such amazing and friendly hospitality as the locals afforded me that night. Countless cups of tea, many spicy and sweet treats and curious conversations amongst those who didn't share a common language.

Possibly the most contrasting 24 hours of my life....

“Valentine's Day is always a very busy day for me,” Matt says.“I love seeing the expressions on people’s faces when they get their flowers and it’s so interesting to see the cards and messages that people write for their loved ones.”
