This is the feedback I love most.

Not “the photos are beautiful” (although I’ll take that too!)

But knowing that someone who was nervous walking in left feeling relaxed and themselves? That’s my jam.

For many people, this is their first time in front of the camera so it’s totally normal to feel nervous. That’s why I take time at the start of the session to just chat and get to know you a bit before we take any photos.

Making you comfortable in front of the camera is the number one thing I focus on at every session. Because that’s when the real stuff happens. The expressions that make you say “that’s so us!”.

So if you’re feeling anxious about being front of the camera, I’ve got you covered.

If you have boys, you already know what kind of session this was.

We started with the classic family portraits, and then Dad hit me with a challenge.

He said he has always loved those “Saturday Night Live” style promo shots. You know the ones, comedians and celebs doing ridiculous poses on bright, colourful backgrounds. He pulled up a few examples and asked if we could do that for the boys.

I thought about it for a second and said. “sure”.

So once we captured the classics, I flipped my studio setup and we went full SNL mode. Big personality. Bigger poses. (And the youngest hanging upside down like a trophy fish is still making me laugh 😂).

The best part is they loved them so much they asked me to create three matching framed portraits for their wall, plus a big statement frame of the whole family together.

Honestly, I love when a family brings an idea and lets me run with it. Give me a little challenge and I am all in, especially when it means the photos feel like you.

5 things I wish every new parent knew about their newborn photo shoot

Because most parents walk in thinking they need to have everything under control… and you really don’t.

Here’s what actually matters:

1. Your baby doesn’t need to be “settled” the whole time
Some of the most beautiful moments happen between feeds, cuddles and little resets. There’s no rushing a newborn.

2. You don’t need to know how to pose
That’s my job. You just need to hold your baby and show up as you are. I’ll gently guide you and your bub through natural, comfortable poses.

3. The studio is designed for real life with a newborn
Warm, calm, private, with space to feed, change and take breaks whenever you need. You’re not expected to power through.

4. Tiny details are part of their personality, not imperfections

Harrison’s awesome mohawk was a perfect example! No fixing, no flattening, no “let’s tidy that up”. His cool hair is part of who he is (along with the “Harry Potter” scar on his forehead).

5. This stage passes faster than you think
The way they curl into you, the newborn stretches, the little expressions… they shift quietly, then suddenly they’re gone.

Newborn sessions aren’t about getting everything right.
They’re about remembering what the beginning actually felt like.

"the unspoken essence of our family"

Giti and her family live in Broken Hill, so just lining up a time when they were visiting family in Sydney took months. Teenagers, a toddler, travel, life. When it finally came together though, it was so worth the wait.

We originally had sunset photos planned, but on the afternoon of the shoot I reached out because the weather just wasn’t going to give us the look we were hoping for.

As Giti wrote in her Google review, “Jay reached out that afternoon to explain the weather wouldn’t give us the look we were hoping for and suggested rescheduling.” I’m always grateful when families trust that call, especially when travel is involved.

One of my favourite parts of this session was hearing Giti tell me how special it was seeing her two older girls captured exactly as they are right now, right on the edge of becoming little women.

This was also the first time they’d had professional photos with their youngest. And she made her personality known immediately! She flat-out refused to take her Converse off at the start of the shoot. No compromise. No discussion.

We rolled with it, captured it, and that photo ended up being one of her parents’ favourites because it showed her determination so perfectly.

In her words, “On the day, he was able to navigate with care and respect each of our kids to get images that captured each of their personalities.”

And honestly, that’s always the goal.

When Giti said the photos captured “the unspoken essence of our family and a keepsake of this moment in time,” that's the kind of feedback that stays with me long after the session ends.

Lately I’ve been catching myself scrolling through old videos of my girls… those tiny, squeaky, adorable voices. Their big smiles through the gaps in their baby teeth.

Part of me aches to go back for a minute, just to live those moments again.

But then I look at who they are now and I marvel at how they’ve grown into these confident, funny, brave humans. It’s this weird mix of missing what was and loving what is.

I think that feeling has found its way into my business too. It actually feels good to pause for a second and look around at the little wins instead of sprinting past them like I usually do.

And a huge part of that is you being here, making this whole thing feel less like I’m doing it alone and more like something we’re building together. So, thank you.

As I wrap up 2025, I just wanted to say thank you for being here.

This year has been a lot, in every direction, and your support has somehow kept this whole operation standing upright.

Every year I end up feeling a bit more sure of what I’m doing, a bit more grateful that I get to do it, and a bit less like I’m winging it.

I’ve got some big ideas brewing for next year, stuff I’m actually excited about, once I’ve had a little time to switch my brain off over the holidays (I cannot WAIT for the kids to have a break from school and the trillion hours per week of dancing they do).
