“I’m a black mother.”
While statistics, facts and research, you would hope, are enough to incite a questioning of how things are operating, an emotional response to a fellow human being in need may be the perspective necessary to help you tune in. I hope the fear in a mother’s voice and the pain in her cry for help can provide this perspective.
The nature of suffering due to the root cancer of deep seeded prejudice (conscious and sub-conscious) being experienced by many (globally and domestically) exists. It’s happening. Whether it has infiltrated your personal experience, directly affected your bubble, inconvenienced you’re lifestyle or not…it’s happening.
Again, this is as much a message to myself as it is those reading. While many of these issues feel far removed from what I’ve personally experienced, I’m positioning myself as close to her experiences as I can through conversation, through education, through demonstration and now vocalisation to better UNDERSTAND the plights of a person in pain. I implore those who are feeling uncertain about where they stand to do the same.
We march again on Saturday. ✊🏾
