Hey, haven't forgotten about you all!

Plenty of projects on the go, life’s been busy, and social media ended up at the bottom of the to-do list.

Time to turn that around and start sharing a bit more of what I've been up to.

Righto, back into it!

Six years at Complete Parts meant photographing a lot of big machinery and even more bits of steel.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing just the machinery. I started noticing the shapes, the light, the scale of the bloody things and the people getting the work done.

That’s the bit I enjoy. Finding a photograph in places most people probably wouldn’t look twice at.

I don’t normally photograph this stuff.

I just get on the plane, drag the gear around, grab the hire car, do the job, edit wherever I can find a seat and eventually get home.
This was a couple of days travelling to Mount Gambier for GEM Group, including stopping beside the road to photograph my boot because the light looked good, and maybe a GEMCrete truck along the way lol.

Nothing glamorous. Just the bit nobody sees.

Some of my favourite photos from a job are usually the ones nobody actually asked me to take.
There’s always the shot list. The hero shots. The things I know I need to come home with. But while I’m doing that, I’m normally looking around for something else.

A bit of light hitting something properly. Hands doing the work. A reflection. A detail. Someone disappearing into a patch of light for about two seconds.

Half the time nobody else even noticed it. That’s probably the part of photography I enjoy the most. Here’s a few of those.

//Digital Negatives//
Going back through the digital archive and finding frames I'd forgotten about.

This one, 2022.
At the time I wasn't thinking about reflections, layers, frames within frames or any of that. I just saw something I liked and took the photo.

Looking at it now, after discovering more of the work of Saul Leiter, Lee Friedlander and Vivian Maier, I see things in it I probably didn't understand back then.

Sometimes it's pretty cool to look back and realise you were already finding your way of seeing things.

It’s not always about what’s on the plate.

I shot these a few years ago, and going back through them reminded me what I actually liked about this shoot.

Yeah, there’s food in the photos. There’s b**r. There’s plenty of that.

But it’s the hands reaching across the table, passing a plate around, having a drink, eating, talking. It actually feels like people are there enjoying the place.

And I reckon that’s the stuff that makes someone want to go there.

If I’m shooting a restaurant, pub or brewery, I don’t just want to make the food look good. I want someone looking at the photos to get a bit of a feel for what it would be like to actually be there.

That’s the story. Not just what’s on the plate, but everything happening around it.

That’s the sort of hospitality content I’d love to do more of with Skene Media.

Sometimes the race car isn’t actually the bit that catches my eye.

Late afternoon light, long shadows, and a sprintcar rolling back into the pits after completing a flag lap for the opening ceremony.

It’s probably why I’m just as happy walking through the pits looking around when there’s no racing happening. Everyone’s waiting for the wheelstand, the slide job or the action shot, and I’m usually looking somewhere else.

Sometimes that’s where the photo is.

I’ve had this footage sitting there since 2024.

I screen recorded it because people would often ask me how long something like a hero card actually takes to put together. You say a couple of hours and sometimes the reaction is, “How does it take that long?”

Well… this is how.

This is just over two hours of work on one side of a hero card, condensed into a little over two minutes.
And with everything now being about making things faster, I actually think this footage is probably more relevant now than when I recorded it.
Using the actual photos. Getting the cutouts right. Moving things around. Changing colours. Matching the branding. Adding the little details and working away at it until it feels right.
It’s not always the big things that take the time.
It’s all the little ones.

Two hours. Two minutes. One side.
