I've been spending a lot of time trying to work out if I want to keep doing this, or if it's time to hang up the camera for good. For now, I'm sticking it out for another year, but to be honest I'm quite burned out on how mercenary the photo scene in Sydney can be.

A while ago there was a photographer who could get me work who told me that paid gigs are shared between a very small group of photographers and they decide who will shoot what and what they'll each charge. This photographer told me Ruby Boland was part of that group. I believed this. When it came to discussing work, this photographer then disappeared. It wasn't the last time it happened either.

I spoke to Ruby last month for the first time, and in talking to her I realised I was lied to, and to not have questioned it sooner was a failing on my part. This kind of stuff shouldn't fly in the scene AT ALL, and neither should claiming networking and then bounce once you've got what you wanted.

Anyway, here's a gallery of The Roots' show on the 2nd of January.

Recently The Roots played an incredibly tight show at Hordern Pavilion to an excited audience. Supporting The Roots were Nai Palm and Talib Kweli. The Roots’ upcoming tour dates are viewable here.

Once more, too long between shares. It has been a long year but there has been many taking photos and working on improving and all that stuff.

Anyway, MONO were the first band I photographed this year. They were also the last band I photographed before lockdown 2020.

I think some of these photos turned out really well and others could've been better, but work well within the overall selection.

My overall goal here was to try and capture the bands in a way that was interesting, or at least seemed interesting. With MONO I aimed more toward trying to capture their form in a way that was different from the last time I photographed them, and I think I did alright in that aspect.

MONO are a great band and worth the time spent seeing them. Also a great band to photograph through how they move and position themselves.

It had been too long between now and the last time MONO were performing in Australia, or at least it felt like it had been too long. Kicking things off with a set of builds was Svntax Error. Gradually and steadily each member moved along with each other, finding a space to fill whilst pushing […]

Once more it has been too long between shares. Happened due to various reasons, part of which involved considering selling the camera gear and stopping photography altogether, but reversed on that decision instead and finding a new path.

Anyway, here are photos from Art As Catharsis's 10 year anniversary gig. This was a fun shoot where I was able to spend some time doing long exposures due to the amount of space and time I had available.

I think all these photos turned out well, with some better than others. Overall this gallery gives a good idea of how the performances were... I hope. The long exposures in particular help to capture the sense of motion in Hashshashin's music.

I strongly recommend checking out AAC and the bands that are part of the label. Not sure what else to add there; I think it's a worthwhile endeavour with a good deal of variety.

Other than that, just want to say that it's interesting as to how the pursuit of bettering one's craft and gaining exposure is a continuing endeavour of improvement and growth.

Photos on Culture Eater.

Recently Art As Catharsis celebrated their tenth anniversary with a show at Lazybones. On the night labelmates Instrumental (adj.), Bonniesongs, Brian Campeau and Hashshashin helped highlight AAC’s range. There was a contrast between them but overall they fit together nicely. As part of the ten ye...

I was thinking of sharing a photo I took as a test shot a few weeks ago, but instead here's a I took early last year. I like Mount quite a lot and I can't explain why. Something about it I find quite appealing.

Also, it's a nice subject to shoot.

This photo was taken in the morning. I'm pretty sure it wasn't too early, so that the clouds were still sitting in the surrounding valleys was quite nice. Creates the illusion of mystery.

Maybe it's actually a suggestion of fantasy.

Here's a bunch of photos I took for Culture Eater on Saturday. Still pretty rusty.

Culling a bunch of to fit the limit is something I sometimes find tough, but it's good as it makes me think about what I am doing and what I am taking.

"Are these photos too similar? Do they work together?" You get the idea.

Anyway, enjoy!

Recently A Broken Sail played their first gig since their last gig. Joining them for this night of bands performing music was Lojetz, Greyhound and Hashshashin. I had the opportunity to shoot the gig, hence the above photos. Go check the bands out. They’re all worth hearing for different reasons.

Hi all,

Long time between posts.

Here are some photos of the wonderful Hinterlandt performing a performance.

It was a venue with low light, though that doesn't seem like the most accurate descriptor. Anyway, the light levels provided their own challenge, but challenge is good.

I hope you enjoy.

Also, check out the group. Their music is top-notch.

Doing a fair bit of practise recently as I'm getting ready to return to shooting gigs. As such, I've been taking a lot of photos of .

Other than being fun to take photos of, I find that, due to the way they move, birds are good for pratcising .

Anyway, here's a photo of a I took last month.

Alright, so this is a photo of a that I took on my birthday which was a good few weeks ago at this stage. Felt pretty lucky to get as close as I did without getting attacked, but what with swans being swans I still kept a slight distance.

I'm gonna do one of those story things shortly, but recently I added a website link to this page as, with the help of the wonderful Karmaela Art and Design (go check out their work; it's great) I got a website for my photography up.

Small galleries and its more for connecting for work, but it's a step into a more productive direction.

Hello all,

Happy new year and all that other stuff.

Here are some I took for Ponydog Productions' 'TattleTales'. It was a fun theatrical performance to watch and photograph, but alas, its showing has now... shown...

Anyway, it was a pretty solid thing to experience. One hopes that it makes a reappearance at some point.

Here's a photo of a small slice of Canterbury Road.

There's not too much to say about this. I took the photo mostly due to not having done much street-related stuff in a while.

I like how there approaching traffic implies a sense of approaching loudness. The close space kind of feels quiet, but that will soon disappear.
