At the workshop I recently attended, we photographed 3 different sessions, all of which I edited differently.

Editing is such an important part of the process - and I find deciding on one specific style incredibly difficult.

Do I go with a grainy, film-edit with warm tones? Do I go with a film-edit without grain? Do I go for something a bit more true-to-colour and classic? The options are literally endless.

Which leads me to ask something that is driving me a bit crazy…

Clients: would you hire a photographer with various editing styles - who would edit your gallery based on the style they felt best suited it? Or would you prefer a photographer with one, solid style so you know exactly what you’re getting?

Photographers: do you have one distinct style? Or do you change up your editing based on the session?

Can I let you in on a bit of a secret?

I used to think “posing” meant forced moments that led to boring, stiff and awkward photos.

But among other things, this photo shoot was proof that this is far from true.

This family session alternated between loose posing in beautiful light, and giving prompts to create fun, playful moments. An interesting mixture of art and play.

Here’s the thing… even though there was a strong focus on guiding and posing, there was still plenty of time for personalities to emerge, creating images that were beautiful yet felt natural, rather than staged.

I loved having the opportunity to watch this balancing act unfold as well as seeing how to hold the space while gently guiding.

I can’t wait to implement this technique with my own sessions - guiding families into beautiful light and sweet moments that create artful images that still feel true to them.

Last week on my birthday (a happy coincidence), I attended a photography workshop at a very cool, retro-styled home, where we participated in 3 creative photo shoots.

I met other photographers and learned lots of tips I can implement in my own business.

These are a few of the solo shots from the maternity session. This was right up my alley, as I am loving in-home maternity at the moment!

Obsessed with in-home maternity sessions.

One thing that I have particularly developed over the last couple of years as a portrait photographer is the way I see light. I now notice the way it falls into a space, how it changes the mood or how the smallest shifts in the way a person is angled can completely change what it illuminates.

Since I primarily use natural light, I have learned to work with what it is offering, manipulating the space and the people in it rather than the other way around.

And instead of being intimidated by its unpredictability, I’ve learned to embrace how it constantly changes - allowing more creativity and variety within my images.

Mother’s Day Minis are finishing up this afternoon. Both days have been amazing. Perfect weather, unbelievable colours and lots of sweet moments captured with all the mums.
