Keep on seeking, and you will find.
History often reveals itself in the most unexpected places. I came to Berrima simply to explore a new place, I wasn’t quite sure what I’d find. That’s when I came across the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, tucked among the pine trees.
This is the first building designed by Edmund Blacket, one of Australia’s most celebrated architects and the mind behind the University of Sydney’s iconic Quadrangle. A master of Victorian Gothic Revival, Blacket modelled this little stone church on the 15th-century St Peter’s in Biddestone, Wiltshire. When you compare the two, the resemblance is clear.
Blacket had a gift for placing buildings naturally within the landscape. Here, the church feels like it belongs: equal bays, a timber hammer beam roof, and stained glass windows (some thought to be over 200 years old). Surprisingly interesting discovery.
