Shopping arcades were a new experience for me when I first came to . They’re still among my favourite. The in is a majestic beauty that seems to stretch to the horizon. Bustling shops, fragrant cafes and old world architecture make this a great location to settle in while the camera works it’s magic.

While we’re on the subject of , here’s a little play on manipulation of time through . This time we let time be the master and show the world as it’s subject. Everyone and everything is subject to time’s will, even if unaware of how hopelessly bound they are to it. This also underscores the value of a good workflow. I couldn’t have constructed this TL from my original renders. I had to go back to the source images to get enough resolution to rotate the frame. Keeping your files organised is akin to keeping the project alive. It can grow and change years later.

There’s nothing wrong with being literal in art. Time-lapse captures time in motion. Well, here’s what that looks like when taken to a literal extreme!

Time-lapse photography is an ideal medium to tell the story of people in crowds. You don't see any one person. Instead you feel the energy created by the flows of people. You also don't get so lost in any one person's behaviour. For example, in this sequence taking in Sydney's iconic Rocks district, a young lady walked right up to my camera to make a face in the middle of the frame. If I were doing anything other than time-lapse, this would have been an issue bordering on her potentially destroying the media I'm trying to create. But with time-lapse, she just becomes a part of the canvas adding textural flow to the scene.

Creators love to use digital media to capture the important moments of life. But what do you do when those "moments" are hours or days long? This is where time-lapse photography comes in. You don't just capture the moment. You capture the detail and texture of the experience. Time-lapse lets you explore aspects of experience that can be difficult to appreciate in the moment. Hours of holding a heavy tattoo machine without losing even a millimetere of precision. Laying completely still as a swarm of hornets stings your arm millions of times. This is why we learn time-lapse photography. It tells the story that a mere photo could never even imagine.

The trouble with being one among thousands looking for that perfect shot is that so many will never get it. There are just too many photographers chasing the same frame. One of the beautiful things about photography is that it gives you the power to overcome this challenge of traditional photography. Getting clever about what the subject is, what the story is, and how the context tells this story can leave you with surprising results. If getting a clean capture isn't possible, consider what you can do with the "noise".

The crowds at Sydney's annual Vivid Festival of Lights can drive any photographer mad. Not the time-lapse photographer, though! Where thousands of traditional photographers hunt for the perfect spot and wait for that precious narrow window of time to capture the perfect frame, the time-lapse photographer has time on their side. What was obstruction and noise become context. What was once keeping you from telling your story can become a part of your story. This is the magic of photography!
