The divers of our recent Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon trip. An appreciation post.

This post captures the amazing group of humans I was lucky enough to share this experience with: Dave, Mandy, Kieran, Scott, Bec and Penny.

What an absolutely amazing bunch of divers to experience Truk Lagoon with!

The dives were out of this world. We also had a few challenging moments, including some crazy wreck penetrations and complete silt outs, but these guys put their training to good use and showed spectacular teamwork and communication.

There was one particular dive… and they know exactly which one I’m talking about.

Even as an experienced Wreck Instructor, that dive was a powerful reminder of how important solid skills, communication and good teamwork are to keeping the entire team safe.

We conquered 22 dives together (I believe!), from a shallow Zero fighter aircraft through to the incredible San Francisco Maru.

What an unforgettable experience it was to dive with and teach these absolute legends.

The San Francisco Maru 🚢

They don’t call it the “Million dollar wreck” for nothing! Initially a cargo ship, the San Francisco spent its first two decades in service. In 1942, following Japan’s entry into the conflict, the vessel was requisitioned by the Japanese government for military use.

Outfitted as a transport vessel for the Imperial Japanese Navy, it carried coal, bauxite and other vital raw materials from newly occupied islands back to Japan.

Towards the front, divers can find three Mitsubishi Type 95 Ha-Go tanks hemispherical beach mines detonators shell casings and boxes of cordite. Hold No. 2 houses two tanker trucks a car and 50-lb bombs and shells. The lower hold also contains a radial aircraft engine.

The San Francisco is a spectacular must-do dive! Her bottom depth is 62 metres and her average is 50 metres making it a dive for experienced technical divers.

When most people think of wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon, they think of history frozen in time. What fascinates me just as much is what happened next.

Over the decades, these wartime wrecks have transformed into thriving artificial reefs. Corals, sponges, soft corals and countless species of fish have claimed the steel structures, turning relics of the past into vibrant underwater ecosystems.

These images were captured on some of the incredible wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon, where every beam, mast and deck seems to support a new layer of marine life. It's a remarkable reminder of nature's ability to reclaim and reinvent.

As a diver and photographer, it's hard not to be amazed by the contrast between rusting steel and the explosion of colour that now calls these wrecks home.

50 metres beneath the surface, photography becomes a whole different game.

The San Francisco Maru is one of Chuuk Lagoon’s most iconic wrecks, but capturing it is no easy feat. At 50m, every minute counts, ambient light disappears into the blue, and getting the shot means balancing buoyancy, trim, lighting and gas management all at once.

That’s part of what makes underwater photography so addictive. Every image feels earned.

This is one of the tanks still resting on the deck, now transformed into an artificial reef bursting with life, proving that even relics of war can become thriving underwater ecosystems.

The deeper you go, the more rewarding the challenge.

No rush, no noise… just a turtle doing its thing while I float there trying not to look like a complete stalker with a camera.

There’s something about black and white underwater… feels a bit more raw, a bit more timeless.

Second time ever shooting macro… and first time back on it in over 12 months.Safe to say it felt like learning to juggle...

Second time ever shooting macro… and first time back on it in over 12 months.

Safe to say it felt like learning to juggle underwater again.
Working on strobe positioning, playing with more open f-stops, and trying to dial in those darker backgrounds without nuking the subject.

Plenty to improve… but also plenty to be stoked about.

Just wish I had more chances to dive with the camera instead of leaving it topside collecting dust 😂🤷

No rush. No noise. Just effortless movement and the occasional curious glance 👀
The kind of encounters that make you forget everything topside.
