Back underwater again 🌊📸
Recently wrapped up a private Learn to Dive course aboard an M/Y out on the Great Barrier Reef, departing the Whitsundays. Once the course was done and with a hand from the captain completing his DM evaluation, I finally got the green light to pull the camera rig back out.
This was my first underwater shoot since the wedding in NZ, and of course… the ocean gods demanded a sacrifice. I’d left the camera on high-speed continuous, which meant my strobe sync was completely off. Shutter fired before the strobes did. Rookie error, seasoned annoyance 😅
That little mistake forced me into shooting natural light only, which is no easy task when you’re wide at 11mm. Challenging, frustrating, but also a solid reminder of how much light really matters underwater.
Second dive, issue fixed. Camera out of the housing, settings corrected… and then one strobe decided it simply wasn’t vibing anymore. Classic.
The joys, the lessons, and the reality of underwater photography. Already keen for the next mission.
