On the 8th June 13 years ago I stood here (where Keri and Lesley are standing) in Halong Bay, Vietnam receiving the word that my long time companion, Nguyen and his wife Lynh had brought their second daughter into this world.
I was then dumbfounded to be immediately asked by them both to name their child.
And so Ngoc Hai (Pearl River) was born.
Now we are on our junk for two nights on the picturesque Halong Bay.

Hang Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) located in the picturesque waters of Halong Bay in the North East Region of Vietnam.
A bit of a hike to get up the stairs leading to the entrance, but we’ll worth it once inside the three vast and beautiful chamber, artistically illuminated with various coloured light to dramatise the contours of walls and ceilings in this limestone area.
Very busy though as almost all tourist junks on the bay visit this wonder on the bay.

When conducting my photographers’ tours of Vietnam, and when visiting the Mekong area, my groups of 14 would often have have a home-stay at this charming ladies home.
Always fresh produce from her garden and fish from her own ponds, would have my groups treated to culinarily delights, whilst sharing rice wine with lots of laughing and singing that was long remembered by my groups.
The most delightful host one could wish for when conducting tour groups.

‘Husband and Wife - Fishing Family’
Early morning capture from a very small craft, with live crabs snipping at my feet, my boatman and I was able to follow this couple at dawn in the back waters of Nha Trang, Vietnam.

I am currently isolating in New Zealand with my wife due to her contracting COVID whilst on a tour. So expect a few more images over the next few days.

‘Another Vietnam Boatman’

The thing to notice in this image is the METAL HAT being worn by this fisherman.
WHY?

With this fisherman, like many others in Vietnam, he attends the extremely large fishing nets which are attached to poles, ropes, pulleys and a winch (on a nearby platform) which allows the gigantic net to be lowered and raised in order to capture and then collect fish from the rivers.
With the net raised, the fisherman must move in his craft under the suspended net to the centre to release the catch.
Unlike the normal bamboo hats that catch on and possibly tear the nets, the smooth surface of the metal hats do not.

There is always a solution to a problem, just takes a little longer to solve at times.
