I’m rebranding and restarting my photography business. 2022 was not the year to dive into something new. Motherhood was my something new.
That, and adjusting to life in a completely new state. In a country on the other side of the world from all of our family and friends.
While I did shoots here and there and edited during Oakley’s naps (which wasn’t long enough), I found myself losing my way and getting more and more confused as to what I should be doing. I felt lost and overwhelmed.
Western society has drilled it into us that we can’t just be a Mum. We must hustle, be successful, be raking in the money. But we can JUST be a Mum. It’s a bloody big job! The biggest job we will ever endure as a woman.
Caught in a vicious cycle of feeling guilty for not being fully present with Oakley if I was doing or even thinking about photography stuff, and then not doing the photography stuff and then feeling guilty for that… Waaaaa! It never ended and I lost so much confidence and belief in myself along the way.
I found myself in a sea of self doubt; “there’s so many photographers here, nobody will want to work with me”. I was constantly comparing myself to others and scared to put myself out there. I was so stuck in my head and paralysed myself to the point of complete inactivity.
Having embarked on a healing journey recently; I have addressed where these self-limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours come from. I have been working hard to dissolve my ego bit by bit.
Even though my ego absolutely despises me for opening up and writing this right now, I know it is the right thing to do to in order to be my true authentic self. I’m following my heart instead of my extremely chatty and insecure head.
Being creative has always been my thing. Whether that be photography, writing, singing, or even impersonating Freddie Mercury on TikTok.
I’ve made myself a promise to put myself out there. To feel the fear and do it anyway.
Here’s to a year of creativity, authenticity and following our hearts.
