If you are chasing creek Bass this is a rig worth tying on. The 4” and 5” Dozer Minnow rigged on a BKK Titan Diver with a buzzer. I like it because it can be worked across the surface or just under it as a subsurface option, which gives it more range than a standard frog. The tail kicks nicely, the buzzer makes plenty of noise, and the hookup rate has been solid.

and I had a great session late last year. This bass was buried more than a metre back in the roots under a nasty undercut, and it felt like it was never coming out.
I fish barbless hooks in the creeks, so sometimes the best technique is to free spool and wait. Eventually the fish swam clear.
The Fallout Minnow saved the day again. Rig it weedless, cast tight into the snag, and let it sink slowly. I run three tungsten balls so in 3 to 4 feet of water it sinks in about 4 to 5 seconds with a nice swimming action. If there’s a bass in there, it’ll find it 100%.

A quick one-night wild camp in the Granite Belt region with .cooks chasing Murray Cod pups. Dusty was on the fly and I stayed with the baitcaster. Interesting to see the cod fire up in the late afternoon, then the whole place go silent again by morning and through the day. Such a good trip.

I’ve started editing some “BFS / Light Baitcast Fishing Diaries” IG Reels. I think it’s a great way to share the gear I use and what I learn along the way.

Sept 2025. During the dry season, the water level drops and creek bass move into shallow sections with deeper undercuts. This stretch was very shallow, with a deeper edge where the fish were holding close to cover.

The water was still cold even though it was sunny, so I used a lighter 10lb fluorocarbon leader instead of my usual 15 to 20lb. It helped the 5” Fallout Minnow sink more naturally and get more bites in the clear, slow water.

This bass measured 47cm and was one of the fattest and healthiest I’ve caught in this stream.

What line weight do you prefer for creek bass in low water?

It casts like a bullet and makes an irresistible clicking noise that Trevally or Tailor love.

Last weekend, and I had an opportunity to go West and try our luck at catching Murray Cod. In a last-minute twist, we had to change our location due to private properties, and ended up at a different campground, but fortunately, it was still close to the water.

The weather was incredibly hot, and the 4-5 litres of drinking water we had was barely enough for a day.

The terrain was probably the most challenging I’ve ever encountered while fishing, but it was definitely worth the effort. We both managed to catch some cod on bigger topwater lures, and Ethan even landed a nice Yellowbelly.

Catching Australian Bass on big surface lure is probably one of the most beautiful form of fishing.

In upper creek environment, they tend to hit bigger lures in very shallow water. My short morning session was very productive, and managed to catch a 46 and 47cm bass.
