One Tree Hill in Maleny has become one of the most recognisable locations in Australian landscape photography, yet at night it transforms entirely. The rolling hills darken, the tree becomes a silhouette, and the Milky Way rises in a smooth arc that fits the landscape perfectly.

This collection brings together several moments captured over years of returning to the same hillside, each with its own character.

Sharing student work is one of the most rewarding parts of this job. Many of the photographers in this collection began with almost no experience, unsure about settings, uncertain about focus, and sometimes nervous about shooting in the dark. Within an hour, they were creating photographs filled with clarity and detail, and by the end of the night the confidence shift was noticeable.

Wineglass Bay beneath the Milky Way during the Tasmania Star Chaser Tour.

There’s a stillness to Tasmania at night that’s difficult to describe until you experience it yourself. The coastline falls quiet, the air feels incredibly clean and the stars seem to stretch endlessly above the landscape.

This was one of those nights where nobody wanted to leave after packing up the cameras.

Over the years, Star Chaser IV has become far more than just an astrophotography tour. It’s a week dedicated entirely to slowing down creatively, exploring some of the most spectacular locations in Australia and photographing the night sky under truly dark conditions.

Wineglass Bay, Dove Lake, Tessellated Pavement, Kelvedon Beach and several secluded coastlines are all part of the journey.

During winter, the Milky Way shines its brightest after sunset, and there are only a handful of places across Australia where the experience feels truly immersive. Over the past fourteen years, I’ve travelled through across Ausralia repeatedly, capturing moments when the clarity and colour of the core are at their strongest.

With the 2026 Masterclass season now in full swing, I’ll be travelling through NSW and Victoria throughout June and July, teaching beginners and enthusiasts how to capture the night sky with confidence. The coastline at Hervey Bay offers a unique sense of scale at night. The horizon stretches wide, the water remains gentle and the Milky Way rises in a clean path above the ocean. On this night I walked along the beach until the foreground opened into a clear composition, letting the curve of the sky take the lead.

On this night during the tour, the Milky Way arced across the sky while aurora built quietly along the horizon, reflecting back through the still water beneath Cradle Mountain. The colour deepened as the night unfolded, turning an already iconic scene into something far more rare.

Tasmania has a way of delivering nights you don’t plan for. When it all aligns, it becomes something you carry with you long after the trip ends.

Somersby Falls has a calmness that always draws me back. The water glides across the rock shelves in layers, creating a natural rhythm that pairs beautifully with long exposure. On this night the Milky Way rose above the treeline in a gentle curve, completing the composition in a way that felt both deliberate and effortless.

I have visited Somersby Falls many times across the years, and each season reveals something new. The balance between movement and stillness is always grounding.

The Central Coast holds some of the most accessible night sky locations in NSW. Cliffs, coves, boardwalks, lighthouses and beaches all sit within short driving distance of one another, allowing multiple compositions in a single evening. On the first night of the recent 2026 tour, we were lucky enough to witness aurora sweeping across the horizon beneath the Milky Way. The colour built slowly, then intensified into bands of green and red stretching across the bay.

Standing there with the group, watching it unfold in real time, was one of those rare moments that goes beyond photography. Even without the aurora, nights here feel expansive. When it does appear, it becomes something you don’t forget.
