Photographs by Harvard Wang

Photographs by Harvard Wang Hi, I'm a wedding photographer in Melbourne and beyond. I don’t photograph couples kissing next to the beach. With a ferris wheel in the backdrop. Then came 2010.

Facing a giant light box. Jumping in the air. Giving peace signs. Next to a Ferrari. With doves on top. Ok I will stop now. For 4 years I was an art director in the advertising industry servicing banks, insurance companies, telcos. (Sometimes tomato paste, but mostly corporate clients.) My college friend Gary and his now wife Leslie-Ann kindly offered to cover my flight ticket in exchange of my do

cumentation of their wedding in North Carolina, USA. I was extremely fortunate because 1. NC is a wonderful place, and;
2. I never looked back since. See me do my thing at http://harvardwang.com

I was chasing the golden hour, and the staircase entrance was an after thought.

Turned out to be my favourite shot of the day (for now).

Straight cut out from a bridal magazine.

The shot wasn't in focus, probably because I was laughing at Tasman overplaying the 'imperial' post.

In the end, the soft focus paired with the black and white treatment actually made it better.

Like a period piece from a museum.

Spring Street, 2022.

Was waiting for the car after a shoot today and saw this from a window.

Unpacked and dashed out to catch the shot.

There's something timeless about the light, structure and composition.

A Melbourne from far away.

Imagine one day, you become rich in America, right? You wait for a public holiday and go on a road trip with your family. And you pick a stop, a servo, a cafe, a greasy spoon, some guy or girl working alone.

You enter the store, order a coffee or a meal, finish it, and before your host return, you sneak in a couple hundred bucks worth of tips.

And then you drive off quickly, but slow enough for your kids to see the expression of the host.

-

I've been bedridden the last few days and came across this YouTube video. It's completely bu****it right. I'm not sure if the lesson is really to teach your children the value of money, or how manipulative it is.

I couldn't help but scoff.

But I also couldn't help thinking of my trip to Missouri five years ago to Waffle House.

I ordered a big breakfast. It came to $11 something. And the lady gave me a table of four despite being a full house. I hate, hate calculating tips so I remember dropping a $15.

You should've seen her face.

To date, I have not met a happier person in hospitality.

Maybe the real lesson is you really don't need to be 'rich' to make another person happy.

It's funny to see 'cutting edge' as the headline next to my photograph on the cover of the latest mag as it was taken 7 years ago for

I remember I was preoccupied with the wife's pregnancy back then, looking through the dusty old hard drive now, it was definitely better than I remembered.

Being timeless is always what I'm after so I guess I answered my own brief.

I have a feeling if you go to the Fitzroy store tomorrow, it'll look the same.

"Oh no, I can't believe this is happening."

This is Schrodinger's reaction - the proposal is going well and horribly wrong at the same time.

No, I didn't just chance upon a proposal next to a cliff in Mornington.

This job is taxing sometimes, you gotta bring some acting chops, and pretend to be a photography noob and ask the couple if they could pose for your amateur portfolio.

And then as you chit chat, the guy, the mastermind gets on his knee.

I'm not sure which is sweeter, the fact that he went through so much trouble to plot a surprise. (It's her birthday in a few days, she won't suspect a thing!)

Or his now fiancee, who probably saw it coming miles away, and was moved anyway.

This week 9 years ago I shot Bec and Yuuki's wedding at her family farm.

It's weird, because they just made us fried chicken last Saturday and our kids made fake candy cakes together.

In fact, our kids swim in the same pool same day every week.

I used to feel a little guilty and 'hacky' sharing old photographs.

But that's what I should be doing - reminding you that some memories are beautiful and important and they make life worthwhile.

Bec's the one who reminded me, that's why we need art in our lives.

Me: k pretend you're running late for your ceremony.

Groom: actually, we ARE running late.

Me: Good, method acting. That's the spirit.

I saw the missed call from the client at 6.30pm.

Uh oh.

I called back and she said the photos were *pause* the best to date. Good work.

And then proceeded to ask me about lighting for zoom calls.

Power move.

During the shoot yesterday, I thought mothers should wear white more often.

I know the reason they don't.
(With a baby, are you crazy?)

But once in a while, they should.

It brings a certain calmness to the portrait.

Kelvin knew me from a college friend, his then-girlfriend, now-wife.

I shot his buildings.
And then I shot their wedding.

And one day he asked, "hey you used to be in advertising right, can you do design?"

Well, sure, if it's simple and straightforward.

"Ok, I need simple and straightforward."

And that's how I ended up photographing and designing the marketing materials for Lothian St, which has just won an Australian National Architecture Award.

The main pull of this project was obviously the architects

The rendering by , printing by

And of course .projects

To think I have any contribution to the award reminds me of advertising account managers trying to get their name on the credit list for walking pass the meeting.

(Although it does feel nice to show off to the daughter.)

And can I just geek out for a moment over the brochure cover - embossing and clear foil of logo mark over a 270GSM Mohawk Felt by
