The Mary River Turtle.

Have you ever seen a turtle with green hair?! 🧑‍🎤 This incredible shot was taken by the talented Chris Van Wyk some years ago, and captured a very interesting looking Mary River turtle with algae growing on its head. 🍀 Did you know that the Mary River turtle is an endangered species? ⚠️ You can help them by keeping our waterways clean and reducing your consumption of single-use plastics. 🐢

These are the sorts of crazy conditions some building designers need to consider these days…

We humans like to think that we're in charge of the planet we live on. Without being able to collectively decide how it should be done, we're at the controls. But are we in control?

So, why did those turtle photos go viral?

Well… at times (most of the time) I have given the images away for free.

The way I see it, the more publicity for the turtle’s cause the better.

For example,
7 years ago today, on 11th of August 2014 I gave the Department of Environment the rights to use my turtle images for free.

Their goal is to protect our natural spaces and they have the resources to do a far better job than I can.

I didn’t take those photos to make money.

Photography is one of the most powerful tools available for protecting natural environment.

Ultimately, if a person loves a natural environment then that person is also obliged to protect it.

8 years ago this little dude started going viral, since then I’ve sold the images countless times. Last year he was in National Geographic, this month I sold the images to a German documentary maker and a kids quiz show, also in Germany.

It doesn’t pay much but it is a fun bit of passive income and each sale is always encouraging to me, as a photographer.

From 2016.

"My conclusion is that interesting photographs are one of the most powerful tools we can use to change the world, and we are obliged to do so." :)

The power of photography to achieve environmental good is, indeed, great, as evidenced by the work of photographer Chris van Wyk.

Found this from 2018, turns out Cate Blanchett is a fan of my photography 🙂
