Cowra Railway Station - Junction for Eugowra line - Black & White

Once a busy railway junction, Cowra was the starting point for the branch line to Eugowra, which opened in stages and was completed in 1922.

The 80 km line served the region for decades, carrying passengers and freight before being suspended in 1991.

Today the rails remain, but the trains are long gone.

Debbie, the Bushmaster that survived an IED

One of the most powerful displays at the Australian War Memorial is “Debbie”, an Australian Army Bushmaster that was struck by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on 10 July 2012.

While carrying six soldiers on a routine resupply mission through the Deh Rawud district, the Bushmaster hit an IED beneath the front-right wheel. The blast caused devastating damage to the vehicle, but its V-shaped armoured hull did what it was designed to do, deflect the force of the explosion away from the crew compartment.

All six soldiers survived, although two were seriously injured.

The Memorial's display also features the stories and portraits of the men who were inside Debbie that day, putting the human story alongside the battered vehicle.

Twelve years after the blast, the surviving crew were reunited with Debbie at the Memorial as the vehicle was prepared for its new display.

The Murals of Eugowra

Eugowra has turned its streets into an incredible outdoor gallery, with murals scattered throughout the town depicting its history, characters, industries and stories.

From the infamous 1862 gold es**rt robbery and the days of bushrangers, through to rural life and the local community, the murals are a fantastic way to explore Eugowra and its past.

Definitely worth taking the time to wander around and discover them when visiting the town.

"The Stallion Express" — A97-010

One of the newest additions to the Australian War Memorial’s aircraft displays is this C-130H Hercules, A97-010.

Aircraft 10 arrived at No. 36 Squadron at Royal Australian Air Force Base Richmond on the 8th October 1978, conducting its first mission just two weeks later — a search and rescue operation to the Solomon Islands.

Over 33 years of service, A97-010 took part in countless humanitarian and disaster-relief missions, delivering aid to communities affected by drought, fire and floods across Australia and to our Pacific neighbours.

It also carried Australian personnel on operations in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, was reportedly shot at by the Taliban, evacuated civilians from a coup in Cambodia, and brought home Australians killed on operations.

A pretty impressive career for one Hercules — and now a pretty impressive addition to the Australian War Memorial.
