Interesting convoy out of Sydney Airport transporting nuclear fuel rods.

For those who don’t know, ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) has been operating nuclear research reactors at Lucas Heights in southern Sydney since 1958.

Today, the OPAL reactor produces radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine to help diagnose and treat diseases, including cancer. It’s an important part of Australia’s medical and scientific infrastructure.

Nuclear science isn’t just about power or weapons. It plays a very real role in saving lives.

The ever stunning 3801 was out and about today for Transport Heritage NSW’s Steam to Surf weekend.

I took the kids up to Wollongong and Coniston stations to catch this beautiful piece of Australian railway history. The lighting was a bit challenging on the southbound run, so I looked for a better position to catch her on the return to Wollongong, after turning around via the Coniston and Port Kembla triangle, now facing back towards Sydney.

If you're hoping to catch 3801 tomorrow, Sunday 18 October, the following times are published on the Transport Heritage NSW website.
