If your bird is blurry but the area just behind it is sharp, you might be dealing with back-focusing. Older DSLR cameras can sometimes focus slightly in front of or behind your subject due to a mismatch between the autofocus sensor and the image sensor, or a lens calibration issue.

Some cameras include AF Fine Tune (or Micro Adjustment) to help correct this and improve accuracy.

I explain more reasons you might be getting blurry bird photos in the full video. Link in the comments.

If your bird is blurry and the background is sharp, try adjusting your focus area.

Flexible spot, medium spot, or zone focus can make tracking birds much easier and reduce missed shots.

Small changes like this can dramatically improve your bird photography.

If the bird is blurry but the background is sharp, it's usually a focus area problem.

Your camera may be focusing just behind the bird instead of on the bird itself.

Choosing the right focus area can make a huge difference.

I explain exactly what to use in the full video. Link in the comments.

If your entire photo is blurry, you're using the wrong focus mode, or your shutter speed might be too slow.

Try these starting points:
• Stationary birds — 1/500 sec
• Moving birds — 1/1500 sec
• Fast birds — 1/2500 sec or faster

These are the starting points I use in my own bird photography.

If your entire photo is blurry, it's usually caused by the wrong autofocus settings or shutter speed.

For moving birds, you should be using continuous autofocus or AF-C (in Sony and Nikon cameras).

Using the wrong mode can easily lead to blurry photos.

Macro photography feels complicated when you first try it.

One thing many nature photographers don’t realise is that small adjustments make a bigger difference than complex settings.

A simple starting point I use is focusing on stability and depth before worrying about perfection.

It doesn’t have to be perfect — it just gives you a reliable place to begin.

I explain all 7 starting settings step-by-step in my latest video if you want to go deeper:

Ever frozen when the perfect shot appears?

A bird flies past, the light is perfect… and suddenly you can’t remember your camera settings.

This happens to almost every beginner nature photographer, and honestly, it used to happen to me all the time, too.

Nature photography shouldn’t feel like mental math. Having simple starting settings makes a huge difference when moments happen fast.

I explain the approach I use in my latest video if you’d like to learn more:
