Our thank yous had to spread across 2 posts:

This one is to the community, every single person who used our space. All 200+ of the studio holders that we've had over the years, all of the hirers and all those who attended in support. Woodburn was made by the people in it and surrounding it.

Admittedly it’s a serious hack to be positioned beside so much talent, there was a constant snowball effect of this creative energy complimenting everything around it. Not sorry to brag. There was always inspiration and encouragement being shared, along with vital support, through trials and tribulations.

We admire, and are forever grateful for the respect and care that everyone had towards the space and towards each other.

It has also been an insanely productive time, there was an inconceivable amount of incredible work created from the building. This work, in all its forms, spread far and wide, reaching and connecting with people way beyond the walls. The contribution that these creatives made to this city is massive and hugely impactful. We’re super proud to be a part of that.

Beyond what work was made, we’re delighted that this space has produced so many great connections, relationships and friends. Who can blame us? A group of people that are curious, who explore, who are reflective, who are expressive and are willing and committed to pursue creative endeavours. We are blessed as a society to have such excellent examples of humans that exude this energy. These are people to honour, cherish and not take for granted.

We feel gratified and extremely nourished to have been able to support these people in their efforts. In all cases whether it was just for a moment, a trial, a stepping stone, a breakthrough, a development or even a failure. We’ve been glad to be a part of the pursuit.

Woodburn St is now Closed.

While it is a huge loss, it was never expected to last so long and we couldn’t be more appreciative.

The story began back in 2016. There were only a handful of people in the building and the previous leaseholder was letting it go. Mum & Geoff were helping to run one of the studios called Makers Place and asked me if I’d take over. I was somewhere else being told off for using an angle grinder in an office space, so figured it was a good idea.

Initially we only got 9 months. I started to realise how many people not only wanted to work in a space like this, but needed it. So we made it official and got 2 more years.

Things were going great, the place was full, we signed a 3 year renewal. Then, the owners tried to back out and sent us a 1 month eviction notice. This turned into a 6 month legal battle. We didn’t win and it ended with us getting 3 months to move out. Then, COVID hit and it would turn out, the owners could no longer pursue the development, so they needed a tenant to sell the building.

We opened the second building Cope st, in case. It was even more problematic and less secure. When I told Cameron, one of the studio holders, it was closing, the wise framer said, "The temporal nature of the space makes it even more valuable." Instead of fearing the loss, I began to just appreciate the time we’ve had.

While always uncertain, the last 10 years at Woodburn st have been an absolute gift.

I want to thank our team: Mum and Geoff who got this off the ground. There is no way it could have happened without them. They’ve been behind the scenes but have done so much work to help keep things a float.

We’ve had some amazing support throughout the years who have also helped to push us along; thanks to Jennika, Alfonso, Carley, Kevin, Annabelle, Mike, G and Chet. With respect to the Gadigal, for the land that we were on.

The landscape is changing and always will but there will always be opportunities for Creatives.
I am exploring new ways to re-create this beautifully rich thing and I hope to work towards something bigger, better and more certain.

After 9 precious years of operating at 1-5 Woodburn St, my heart is heavy to announce that Woodburn will be closing in June.

The block has recently been sold for $49.5million, which is a little beyond our budget to secure. As a development site, it was inevitable that the space would be converted and honestly, we never expected it to last this long.

Woodburn has been an anomaly in a city that has passed a tipping point, no longer able to accommodate creative production space without systemic intervention. I would at times drop the line “this isn’t real,” if ever anyone felt too comfortable about the situation. Though, we never really had the chance, between the drip-fed short-term demo leases, a legal battle with one of our landlords and the pandemic. That being the case, it has served as a sanctuary for literally hundreds of creative practitioners over the years.

I cannot express enough the fortune of being able to ride along with more talented individuals than I can even conceive. To be able to give and receive the support from them made our community one to be cherished.

An immeasurable amount of incredible work has been produced and shared in this space. Along with the sheer mass of achievement felt through personal pursuits, it’s had a monumental impact.

It is sad to lose, but we couldn’t be more grateful for the time we’ve had. There’s only a matter of months left, but we’ll be squeezing every bit out of them and welcome everyone to make the most of it.

The future is yet to reveal itself for our organisation but that’s not to say that we don't have grand plans.

A few photos from this weekend's exhibition. "Thank you to everyone who came to The Things We Become over the weekend. Joe and I are deeply grateful for your love, support, and generosity. Together, we’ve raised over $4000 to support artists and families in Cape Maclear, Malawi ❤️
Each person who purchased a work will receive photo and/or video updates from those they’ve directly helped.
Massive thanks to Nathan Kaw and Woodburn Creatives for hosting us so beautifully. We feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a generous and creative community. 🙏✨"
