The Flying Fox. To lots of people here in Sydney these bats are a normal sight each night just after sunset when they take to the sky. To a visitor they can easily be mistaken for a flock of birds in the distance , until they near and their distinct shape comes into view. These bats live in colonies of thousands. I recently came across these in the tree tops. Tree after tree alive with flapping wings, screeching and rustling leaves and branches. Unlike the tiny bats we get in Ireland, these guys are pretty big with huge wing spans. To some they can look terrifying as they crash land on branches and other bats, with fights erupting. But when they are wrapped up sleeping or peeking about they look the complete opposite!
