Our universe is estimated to be 93 billion light years across. And within that there is a suggested 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. On average each galaxy is home to 100 million stars, in clusters of all different shapes, colours and sizes. And even still, these numbers are thought to still be a gross underestimation by esteemed scientists around the world.
To me that is enough to make even the most confident of us feel small.

Calm. The soft, salty mist in the air settling all around. Silence for just a moment, as the ocean takes a breath. Broken suddenly by the roar of the swell crashing into the rock wall as it is redirected straight toward me

Four months since the origin of me previsualising this image. Eleven kilometers walked in a round trip after hours. And the company of Alex Wise Photography and Rob Morello ( on instagram) keeping me entertained and safe in the dark along this secluded, and we would later learn haunted (ha! Yeah right…), road.

After weeks and months of planning and waiting, planning and waiting, and then some more planning and waiting. Clear skies were forecast for Point Nepean last Friday. We walked in through the dark with the setting crescent moon. And after setting up and capturing our first test shots, to our amazement, our LCD’s showed a subtle red glow of the fading Aurora Australis. Pretty lucky, hey?

The rainforest behind Wye River and Lorne is so dense and beautiful, it makes me wonder just how many hidden corners it has that one could explore…
One such corner found 40 minutes behind Lorne is Staircase Falls. Though beautiful and unassuming, the area in which these falls flow is quite compact and difficult to move around in. Nonetheless it provides quite an intimate and tranquil environment to capture images..

Walking down the stairs to the beach, our eyes had not yet adjusted to the night and our head torches did not have the strength to illuminate the sea. It was the roar of the sea painting the picture in our minds eye of imposing swell that would threaten to wash us off the safety of our perch.
Thankfully our imagination would stay just that. Our ankles barely got wet. And we looked out, alongside the Dragon Head, in awe at the beauty and mystery of the Milky Way.

As the shadow of the earth engulfed the moon, casting over it a shroud of red, all around me grew dark and still. I’ve experienced melancholy before capturing images, but viewing this slow progression was transcendent of all previous experiences.
Standing in the middle of a field, at the southern tip of the Grampians ranges, I witnessed something I can only describe as Impossible Beauty.

My description this week of how this image was taken will be a little different as this is a composite blend of multiple images throughout the night.
All taken through the view of the Eclipse, approximately 25 frames were used

I had seen image upon image upon image of the towering rocks of Cape Woolamai’s “Pinnacles”, but I don’t think any image ever conveyed to me the sheer size of it's boulders. Rock hopping here is no easy task. As some of the smooth rocks under your feet would easily come up to your waist.
Nonetheless, despite the difficulty in moving around, the scene lends itself to some of the most striking and beautiful images I have seen. The best of which, in my opinion, have been taken by Rob Morello, who you can find on instagram .

I think I’ve had a large mental shift in how I view and how I enjoy my photography recently. Don’t get me wrong, the sheer elation and pure joy I feel when the sky turns every colour and hue is something that I treasure and will chase as long as I am able. But the existence of colour in my photography life isn’t as crucial of a factor, as it once was, in how fulfilling I find the actual process of being out in nature and capturing images. Internally, my view on photography is ever evolving. So I wonder how long I will hold onto this state of contentment.

On a recent adventure with and , deep in the rainforest behind Wye River, we found ourselves at Allambee Beek Falls.
This waterfall was perhaps one of the most difficult falls to find a composition I was happy with. And I feel it should not go understated that I wasn’t the only one. Craig and I found great amusement in Gary’s refusal to even get his camera out of his bag for the first twenty minutes at the falls whilst we walked backwards and forwards, clambering over rocks and fallen trees, trying to find the right angle.
After trying a few compositions I decided to wander back down the river and investigate if anything was better downstream.
I found this and I am quite happy with it.

It’s no secret that sunrise is my favourite time to shoot. Perhaps it’s because by instinct I tend to be a contrarian and not join the masses who find it easier to shoot sunset rather than rising early to capture suns first light.
But if you allow me to wax philosophical for a moment, I think it is more because of the peace I find in the stillness of the morning. The solitude and quiet, even in a place like the Melbourne CBD, that shortly thereafter evolves into a hive of activity. When you first step out, darkness veils the potential for whatever that day will bring. And watching that unknown reveal itself is quite the experience.
