Your go-to guide to help you create genuine connection that leads to natural, emotional photographs your clients will absolutely adore.

There’s so much to learn running your photography biz. Firstly the camera settings, then understanding light, marketing and promoting your business while doing all the back-end admin. Now you’ve booked the clients and you’re with them face-to-face. This is yet another skill you need to know and learn: How to create an amazing client experience so they’ll forget the camera is even there!

It’s WAY more than saying:
‘Look at me’
‘Walk over there’
‘Smile at each other’

In fact I try to avoid saying these things. It’s about creating a safe and fun space where your clients relax into enjoying the time together with their family. They feel comfortable enough in front of you to let their guard down and to be their true selves with each other.

Once that has been created you can gently guide the session and help with tasks, prompts or games to get the connection rolling. It’s what happens after the prompt that you get that genuine reaction. The heartfelt smiles and belly laughs at each other, that’s when the magic happens. Everyone interprets a prompt or game differently so it’s important to learn to read the room and tailor your session to your clients personalities.

What I think about BTS footage:

I always forget to film BTS footage during my shoots😬

There are other photographers out there absolutely smashing it at creating BTS footage for reels and they are doing really well. They use Meta AI glasses or a phone mount that attaches to the top of the camera 👌🏼

The reels then created can be used to attract more clients, educational reels or to help show your personality as a photographer which is awesome 🙌🏼

I mainly forget as I’m fully focused on connecting and talking to my clients to get to know them and make them feel as comfortable as possible.

I am a millennial (super early fourties 💁🏼‍♀️) and have been running my business for over 13 years. Reels and BTS weren’t a thing for the first 7 years of me being in biz. So remembering is always an after thought.

I also think it could potentially distract clients away from being fully present with their family and from being their true selves, knowing they have not only a camera taking photos but also a phone filming them during their session.

Gorgeous Ash messaged me when she found out she was pregnant, with twins! Yes TWINS!! Then a few months later messaged and asked if she should get maternity photos taken, a bit hesitant, a bit unsure.
I said 100% YES!! Being pregnant is a massive feat but with twins is an absolute marvel.

This was from Ash after receiving her photos today:
“ Stooooooooooop. F****************king hell N**S 😭😭😭 you have no idea how horrible I’ve been feeling lately and you’ve just worked absolute MAGIC. Thankyou Thankyou for capturing my last pregnancy. I’m soooo glad we did this ❤️❤️❤️”

You never regret getting photos taken but you might regret not having them done 🥰🥰😘😘
