Mick Jones Photography “I can’t sing, I can’t dance, I can’t paint ….. but I can click” The art of photography has was been a huge discovery for me late in life.

So there's a degree of regret in relation to all the opportunities that I've missed throughtout my life up until about 3 years ago. After all, I spent 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy where I saw a great portion of the world and a significant part of my professional career working in Africa and Papua New Guinea. During that time I was never interested like I am now. Life goes on so I guess no

w it's time to make up for lost time and opportunities! I choose carefully the work and projects outside of my own that I undertake to ensure that my passion for taking photos dosen't become a chore and that I can give them all my full attention. I enjoy a range of genres with sport, in particular motorsport photpgraphy being my real passion. I like to challenge myself in all the other areas and always willing to give it my best effort in order to get the highest possible result. I still have a lot to learn and understand. I enjoy capturing everyday people doing what they like doing. I get a real sense of satisfaction in creating images of people that have surrounded themselves with the things (and other people} that 'make them tick'. Photography for me is all about 'fractions of existence' - once you've got the shot......you've got it forever. I live with my wife Vicki of 30 years and keep close to my two grown children in the beautiful Lockyer Valley, Queensland.

I enjoy many diffrent genres of phoptography. But I particulalry enjoy working on images that make me appreciate how insignifcant, small and sometimes inadequate we humans are.

Whether I'm standing under the vastness of an incredible night sky, standing in front of a mountain, or witnessing motorsport at the highest level. There are moments where you are dwarfed or bewildered by awesomeness, power or vista.

The ocean does this for me. After spending 20 years at sea I've experienced every one of its moods, every bit of it's capability and the solace it can sometimes bring to the human soul.

Here's some from Redbill Bay off Bicheno last week. God I wish I was into photography back in my navy career!

I made a quick trip to Tasmania to help with some family stuff and Vicki and I were able to spend a couple of days on the East Coast staying in Bicheno.

The weather was pretty ordinary with a massive rain event that dropped 200mm of rain across most of the state.

But I managed to get out early on Wednesday morning for sunrise as the storm cleared. Spectacular sky and light!!

I concentrated on the beaches close to town and Diamond Island off the coast.

Hope you like them.

Good morning world! Here is my first official shot in anger with the drone. This top-down look at an old tree near Forest Hill was a bit of a first test of my confidence, especially given that I shot this a fair way away from where the drone was launched.

This tree is about 30m high in thick scrub. It was a bit foggy this morning, and I was able to film an awesome sunrise. I'll work on that today and see how it turned out.

I saw a post from a local portrait photographer I know. She was making the point that an AI portrait produced by the myriad of platforms available these days are so easy to access.

But such an artificial process won’t replace the connection, the trust and the authenticity of having a real photographer present you as a real person.

At least for once in your life get in touch with a photographer to engage with, have a laugh with and allow them the opportunity to show you as your ‘real’ true self.

Well, I've been bo***ng up on my drone the past few days to prepare for a proper assault on the world somewhere over the weekend. I've been keen to understand the camera's quality, it's been a bit windy, and apart from a bit of low-altitude flying in the backyard after work, I'll wait for better conditions.

But I thought I'd get a snap of what was a nice sunset this evening from the ground, a bit of work in Lightroom, but the basics were ISO 100, F1.7 at 800th of a second. still trying to work out the camera setting adjustments, but it's a promising start.

Some action and people shots from the Hi-Tec Oils The Super Series at the Queensland Raceway on the weekend. Been a while since I've been out there. Great to see some quality improvements for both the spectators and competitors.. Nice work Tony Quinn.

When veterans leave the Australian Defence Force, the shift back into civilian life can be both arduous and challenging, particularly following active service roles.

This image entitled ‘Love, Patience and Support’ helps illustrate how critical family is in helping veterans navigate that transition. Inside the home, generations gather in a warm, familiar setting, a moment that symbolises stability and connection. A veteran stands surrounded by loved ones whose presence offers reassurance, continuity, and understanding. Effortless family interactions that help a veteran understand how they are loved and supported.

Outside, children sit together in relaxed conversation, representing hope, normality, and the future. Their energy, curiosity, and openness often help veterans reconnect with the lighter parts of life. Children rarely realise the impact they have, but their everyday moments, laughter, questions and hugs can make heavy days feel a little lighter.

Families carry much of the unseen load. They listen when memories surface, provide patience when adjustment takes time, and offer steadiness when routines feel unfamiliar. Through love, presence, and everyday acts of care, they help veterans rebuild their sense of belonging.
