Saturday Morning Kayak

So wonderful to be out on the water again. Winds have been calmer the last couple of mornings so decided to get out and enjoy the warmer weather before winter sets in.

Here's a few pics of my morning.

Lunar eclipse sequence from Western Australia.

Here in WA we didn't get to see the whole show, moonrise was before sunset and astro twilight ended 11mins after the total eclipse. Which meant we had dark skies a bit later than the rest of Australia. These images were taken from total eclipse to partial eclipse, from 7:30 to 8:30pm.

Aurora Australis
Wagin, Western Australia
12/11/25

Out chasing Auroras once again, Andrew having to drive me all over the state to find some clear skies. We had our first night in Albany which was covered in smoke haze due to a fire west of town, no Aurora that night. Next day we headed back north and ended up in Wagin. Found the spot on a lake south of town and set up for the night. Here's some images of the night. Video to follow shortly.

Aurora Australis
Dawesville, WA
01/01/25

Back down to Dawesville for another Aurora; skies were busy and it seems getting busier, crabbing season so the waters were busy as well. Towards the end of the night we were seeing flashes in the sky and it took me sometime to actually turn around and figure out it was the northern thunder storms in Perth. The lightning and incoming clouds forced me to head home probably a bit too early.

Happy New Year to you all x

~1450 imgars taken over a 4 hour period between 9pm and 1am.

Aurora Australis
Island Point, Herron, WA

It looked like there might be some action last night so Kaye and I headed down to Island Point around sunset to ensure we had our spot. We were surprised to find no one around so we set up our cameras and then had dinner while waiting for astro darkness around 8:20pm. Just before that time we saw notifications that there was colour and people were imaging the aurora in WA and way further north than we were. I thought I'd check with my phone and sure enough there she was, dancing across the sky. There were a few shows during the three hours we were there and another very early in the morning but we were long gone by then.

We practically had the place to ourselves, there were 2 groups of people that stopped by but they didn't stay not long enough to capture or see the aurora unfortunately. It was pretty miserable with the wind but rugged up with coats and beanies we managed it.

This time lapse covers 3 hours with 765 images.

Aurora Australis
Mandurah, WA
11 October 2024

Here's a few images of the awesome display the other night. The aurora showed so many colours over the 5 hours we were able to capture here in Western Australia.

I have captured two meteors and in the star trail pic you can see the trails of starlink satellites and one plane. I also managed to stitch a few images to create a panorama, thanks Tracey.

The geomagnetic storm ended up being classified as a G4. G5 being the strongest rating.

Here's some info from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA).

G4 Severe Geomagnetic Storm is a major disturbance in Earth's magnetic field; often varying intensity between lower levels and severe storm conditions over the course of the entire event.

Colours of an Aurora
Green: is produced when charged particles collide with oxygen molecules at altitudes of 100 to 300km.
Pink and dark red: is produced by nitrogen molecules at altitudes of around 100km.
Red: higher in the atmosphere at altitudes of 300 to 400km are collisions with oxygen atoms.
Blue and purple: collisions with hydrogen and helium molecules.

I think I have a little of all these colours in these images.

Aurora Australis
Mandurah, Western Australia

Wow, wow, wow. What a display, so many different colours of this aurora and it was so huge at times that I couldn't capture it all in one shot.

This timelapse has 1724 images
Starts from 11:56pm 10/10
Finishes 5:01am 11/10

We had a 46% moon until 1:40am when it set and astronomical twilight began at 4:15am which meant a couple of ISO changes throughout the night and a complete change in direction shooting towards the west at dawn where the display was getting bigger and bigger but fading fast.

So many different colours seen in this display, it was an awesome spectacle.

Round two tonight!
