Hello There,

Its me again,

I thought I would talk about my photography career.

Work as a physio and a photographer

Begging for work from bands, whatever I could - imposter syndrome

studying full time with 20 hrs of contact time - doing pracs etc

Alot of rejections.

Getting a few jobs and somewhat consistent clients but I made a lot of mistakes.

I didn’t really understand my camera,’ I was learning on the go

And editing, what even is that?

Then professor Youtube came in, studying the art of photography and my confidence grew.

My first big gig was a 2 day festival with San Cisco headlining, that was pretty cool.

Bought a fujifilm, worked my way into manual

Event photography, cocktail nights, birthdays, vineyards, portraits etc.

This is where the money was, and had the least painful editing.

And that’s it… here I am now working as a physiotherapist during the day and photographer in whatever time I have left.

Recently I have been getting into portraiture, and I was blessed with the opportunity to photography Hiresociety’s front end team.

My goal was to show their personality, and character rather than just bland corporate headshots.

What a great day, more BTS to come.

Fujifilm is all the rage at the moment, and I understand why.

But do you?

1.Replicate the aesthetic of film
Fujifilm’s unique film simulations have colour profiles that are baked into the camera, based on the film that Fujifilm manufactures. These range from fan favourites like classic chrome, to velvia, to black and white films like acros, with also the ability to add grain. These simulations make photography so easy, with effectively pre-edited photos straight out of camera.

2.Shooting experience
The way a camera feels in the hand, and the process of shooting it is extremely important to me. Fujifilm cameras, particularly the XT, X100, and Xpro lines typically have all the components of the exposure triangle on the outside of the camera; this creates a tactile shooting experience that feels very similar to old SLR film cameras of the past. I find this experience much more inspiring than other brands such as Sony or canon.

3.Beautiful retro inspired cameras
A beautiful camera is one that you are going to want to use. Fujifilm cameras are heavily inspired by the film cameras of the past, and have many of the same design features. I love it, enough said.

4. Colour science
While I don’t fully understand it, fujifilm has colourists that work day and night to change how their cameras interpret colour, and wow they do a good job. Even the raw photos require very little colour grading, and there is something very cinematic about how these cameras render images.

5. Small form factor
The Fuji X series cameras have a very small form factor, making them easy to carry, lightweight, pocketable which reduces friction of the shooting. Unless you have the budget for medium format, that’s a whole another story.

I thought I would give this video stuff a go.

It felt pretty weird being in front of the camera, particularly in video format, but I want to make this account a bit more relatable. Give you guys an idea what my photography life looks like and who I am as a person.

I don’t intend on becoming some sort of photography influencer, and won’t be promoting some online course or telling you how to live your life, as that’s not my business.

I just want to share my photography, thoughts, and my personality with you all. More videos to come.

Hi everyone,

I thought I would reach out and do a more formal introduction.

My name is Ben and I am a photographer based in Perth Western Australia.

I define my photography as “Capturing stories, experience, and emotion.”

In early 2023 I started my online photography journey with my instagram account ben_on_film44 capturing travel photography with my humble film camera. This account boasted photos from over 15 countries from numerous trips across Europe, Africa and Asia. The joy of creating that account and sharing photos with others, pushed me towards pursuing photography in as a part time job because if you enjoy it, it doesn't really feel like working.

I have had the pleasure of photographing several concerts, festivals, bands, events, portraits and products and have enjoyed all of it (except copious hours of editing of course). I primarily shoot my photos with the Fujifilm X Series lineup and have grown to love the colour science, shooting experience and results that I get with them.

This year my goal is to take my photography to another level, by improving my craft, building an online presence, landing more jobs and building a community around my work. I will also be branching out into videography services - so stay tuned if that is something you are interested in.
