Are you a wedding photographer struggling with harsh light? Here are some mistakes and fixes
Mistake 1: Asking the couple to look directly into the sun in harsh light
Fix: Have the couple look at each other, gently close their eyes, or reserve harsh light for more high-fashion inspired portraits.
Mistake 2: Avoiding shadows
Fix: Embrace shadows. Where there are shadows, there is light, and you can use that light to guide the viewer’s attention exactly where you want it. Shadows help you create depth and intention in an image.
Mistake 3: Overexposing the highlights
Fix: Expose for the brightest part of the frame, which is often the dress. This helps you retain important detail. It also reveals the shadows and allows you to place your subjects in pockets of light to create bold, striking images.
To really put this into practice, slow down and be intentional with light. It’s always better to have one great photo than ten average ones.
