A collection of textures from above, captured across different parts of Australia.

From cracked salt lakes and dried bauxite tailings ponds to gold mine tailings and salt evaporation ponds, these landscapes can produce some incredibly intricate patterns and abstract textures when viewed from the air.

What I find particularly fascinating is how different they can all be. Climate, rainfall, evaporation and the minerals or materials present all play a part in determining the colours, shapes and sizes of the cracks that form.

Some develop these beautiful, tightly packed networks of tiny fractures, while others break apart into enormous geometric shapes stretching across the landscape.

It’s one of my favourite things about aerial photography. You can fly over an area that looks relatively unremarkable from the ground, only to discover something that resembles an abstract painting from a few hundred metres above.

The salt lakes of the Western Australian Wheatbelt never cease to surprise me.

I try to find a balance with my work between areas where we’ve completely changed the landscape, areas that remain almost untouched, and then those fascinating places that sit somewhere in the middle.

These salt lakes are a perfect example. They’re part of an ancient system that has been accumulating salt for tens of thousands of years, long before we began clearing the Wheatbelt for agriculture. Some still sit amongst pockets of their natural habitat, while others have been dramatically altered by the farmland that now surrounds them.

In my time photographing them I’ve learnt that they almost seem to “flower”, much like the wildflowers do in spring. You need substantial winter rains to put water back into the system, followed by the right conditions and a steady rate of evaporation as the lakes begin concentrating again. Salinity, microorganisms, minerals, water depth and the lake bed itself all play a part in what happens next.

When everything lines up you can find almost every colour imaginable sitting alongside one another, reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, blues and some so dark they’re almost black.

The various stages of processing bauxite to create alumina, something I’ve documented for many years now and something that continues to draw me back.

The sheer scale of these locations demands attention, but it’s the aerial perspective that opens the door on an otherwise invisible world from the ground. What can look like barely visible at eye level changes completely once you’re in the air.

I’ve always felt it’s important to open the door to these otherwise unseen areas. Most people will never see what exists beyond the boundaries of these sites, let alone see them from above. Photography gives us a way to look inside and understand the scale of what’s actually there.

This collection moves through different stages of that process, from the refinery itself through to the vast tailings ponds, showing a side of the landscape that usually remains hidden.

One thing you notice very quickly from above is that nature + fluids + gravity create tree like structures everywhere.

From the beautiful natural tidal areas of the Kimberley, along the Pilbara coast and even into mine tailings, these tree and vine like patterns just keep repeating themselves. It’s been a real joy collecting them over the years, and they’re now one of the first things I find myself looking for whenever I’m around water.

There’s actually a fairly simple reason behind them. As water moves downhill under gravity, it naturally searches for the easiest path. Tiny differences in elevation, sediment and resistance begin directing the flow into channels. Those channels collect more water, become deeper, split and branch, and over time you end up with these incredible dendritic patterns that look remarkably like the branches of a tree.

The environments can be completely different, tidal mudflats, mineral rich landscapes, salt lakes or mine tailings, but the same basic forces keep drawing these familiar shapes into the landscape.

Nature repeating itself at completely different scales, and something I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of looking for from above.

Tidal mudflats, the Kimberley, Western Australia.

With tides moving upwards of 10 metres from high to low, they not only create some of the most beautiful patterns across the muddy surface below, but the landscape itself seems to breathe with each shift, allowing people and wildlife to move, feed and enjoy the fruits of this incredible region.

For an aerial photographer like myself, it also acts as the perfect artistic canvas, resetting and redrawing itself with every tide. What I photograph one day may never look quite the same again 🤙

Tailing Ponds, Western Australia.

Over the last decade I’ve been capturing various types, sizes and stages of the mining process around Western Australia. Some are deep in the Australian outback, with only a road, a few signs and a big hole in the ground to mark their location. Beyond that, nothing else. Some are even right on the doorstep of our cities.

Some have an almost apocalyptic look to them, while others can weirdly be beautiful, but all of them tell a story about our resources boom and the environmental interaction that comes with it.

What I find amazing is that beyond these few aerial images, or a quick glance at satellite data, they remain largely hidden and almost impossible for the general public to view. Enigmas out in the middle of nowhere.

That’s a large part of what keeps me heading back, searching for more and sharing what I think is an important part of the story here in W.A.

A few from the beautiful Shark Bay, Western Australia.

The first image was captured back in June and is actually straight off the drone, stitched together in-camera and then given a quick edit in Lightroom Mobile, as I haven’t had the time to properly sit down and edit the roughly 40 individual files that make it up in my home studio yet.

I wanted to share it anyway because it has to be one of the most beautiful moments I’ve captured in Shark Bay in recent years, and the first full circular rainbow I’ve ever managed to capture in the region! Damn cool.

A massive front was rolling in and as soon as I saw what was happening I knew exactly what my mission was. I managed to get the drone up and capture it just in time, although getting it back was another story… the rain absolutely hammered down and the poor drone got completely drenched 😂 Thankfully it survived to tell the tale!

It’s moments like this that keep me coming back to Shark Bay. I’ve photographed this region for well over a decade now and somehow it still manages to throw something completely new at me.

I’ve arrived in the U.S. as of last night, just waiting to get up to Salt Lake City, where I’m hoping to spend some time shooting its great salt lakes and exploring a few other locations from above. Very different landscapes to home, which is half the fun.

Hopefully I’ll have some gnarly new stuff to share from over here soon 🤙

Tidal mud flats, The Kimberley, Western Australia from 2000ft up.

I recently had a conversation with someone while out in this region last month that made me question my style, my creative direction and really the core of who I am as a photographer, and dare I say artist.

It was an off the cuff comment, but it was one of those rare moments, thankfully these days they are rarer, that made me question the direction I was heading creatively and the ethos behind my work.

I want my imagery to push my own boundaries. I want to see and interpret the world in a way that triggers that childlike wonder I still get from this planet, especially when viewing it from above. I don’t necessarily want to show things exactly as they are unedited, I want to show how they make me feel.

After 15 years of chasing this dream of being a photographer, from the patchy and rocky start, to slowly finding my way and where I am today, if there is one thing I can pass on that has become fundamental to me, it’s to stay true to yourself and that inner voice guiding your creative direction.

Learn the ropes, take advice, listen and grow, but don’t let the noise guide you.

Let your own inner voice speak, trust it, and see where it takes you on this amazing journey through photography and the world 👊
