Northern Gannets are usually portrayed in a flattering, bright mood. I have plenty of such images, I like them, but Scotland's notorious changeable weather offers plenty of opportunities for other types of images as well. Here I looked to portray a more sinister looking bird against a dark unsettled sea.

Photographed on the North Sea coast of Scotland.

If you're wondering where this bird's bill is, it's hidden under the crest.

This is the Guianan Cock-of-the rock, a species of Cotinga found in South America. Groups of male birds like this one gather in leks where they perform elaborate display rituals that show off their magnificent plumage to challenge rivals and beckon to the females.

I photographed this one in the Amazon in Brazil.

Ok, I admit, before I got into wildlife photography I would not have believed a bird like this could be real. Blue bill, emerald green eyes, bright red throat and belly? Yeah right!

The Broadbills of Asia are something else. They live in the dense canopies of wet forests, allowing them to hide despite their brightly coloured plumage. I tracked this one down in Thailand.

Looking like a bandit at Mardis Gras, this looker can be difficult to find in its swamp habitat, let alone photograph.

It took me a few attempts to get this image with the brightly lit mangrove background. Photographed on Trinidad.

Summer time is breeding time for these Lilac-breasted Rollers.

After the initial courtship, the male (photographed in flight) brought the female (perched) a gift of food and she allowed him to mate. He then flew off while she enjoyed her meal. Photographed in South Africa.

Dinosaurs are alive and well. And they look like this.

Found in the tropical rainforests of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, Southern Cassowaries weigh just shy of 200 lb, stand almost 6 ft tall and can kill you with a dagger-like claw. I stayed well clear of this wild Australian bird that was taking care of four young.

True to its name, this common Common Chaffinch proves that subdued colors can be just as appealing as vibrant ones. Blending well with the background better protects it from predators.

Photographed in the Scottish highlands.

Not just a pretty bird, the Hyacinth Macaw also happens to be to largest parrot in the world, measuring 3 ft 3 in from head to tail.

Its survival in the wild looked bleak, with habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade taking their toll. Although still listed as vulnerable, the construction of suitably sized nest boxes and cooperation of local land owners now gives this species a fighting chance.

I photographed this individual in the Pantanal in Brazil, where it allowed me to approach quite closely.

If someone told me you could combine yellow, red, black, gray and silver, I'd raise my eyebrows and question their sanity. But this Silver-eared Media from the highlands of Malaysia proves it can be quite pleasant to the eye.

This is not your ordinary owl. Found in open landscapes across North and South America, it is only slightly larger than an American Robin and nests and roosts in burrows such as those excavated by prairie dogs.

This pair of Burrowing Owls found an unusual place to to call home - just inside the perimeter fence of Suriname's only international airport.

South Africa in the summer is a bird lover's bonanza. Resident bird species such as this Rufous-crowned Roller (AKA Purple Roller) are joined by a plethora of intra-African and Eurasian migrants. At times it appears as if birds are dripping from trees.

This species is not as common as Lilac-breasted Rollers and European Rollers, so when I finally came across one, I knew I had to make the best of the situation. I positioned my vehicle so that distant trees were behind the bird, providing a nice out-of-focus background. The branch it was perched in was quite high, so I photographed from some distance and shot with 1,000mm focal length to create a more pleasing angle.

Having been given a tip-off, I found myself in a empty parking lot before dawn, staring at a fern stump and waiting. From the gloom came a dark bird with velvety black plumage.

This was his display post and within seconds he erected the feathers of his throat to reveal the metallic blue plumage and started calling for a mate.

Victoria's Riflebird is a bird-of-paradise found in the wet tropics of northeastern Australia.
