Feather & Orbit exists because I wanted photography to have room for real life.
For the families who might have wondered whether family photos would actually work for them. For people who feel awkward, self-conscious or uncomfortable in front of a camera. For anyone who needs to move, pause, warm up slowly, have some space, or do things their own way.
And for all the tiny, supposedly ordinary things that are quietly becoming the things we’ll miss.
I’m Ellie, a Perth photographer based in Rockingham. Mum, engineer, neurodivergent human, chronic noticer of things.
I photograph neurodivergent-friendly family sessions, maternity, in-home newborns, couples, elopements and intimate weddings across Rockingham, Perth and beyond.
You don’t have to perform here.

Buckingham Palace, obviously.

It is strange arriving somewhere you have already seen a thousand times. It looked exactly like Buckingham Palace, which is both a ridiculous sentence and completely true.

Enormous. Immaculate. An industrial quantity of tourists.

The camera did what it always does and started breaking the spectacle into smaller things.

Light catching one gilded wing. A guard made tiny by all that stone. A crest half-lost behind the gates. Red jackets flashing through the shade.

I did take the postcard photograph too.

Proof that I can occasionally behave like a normal tourist.

The laundromat was Montana’s idea.

One child needed bubbles. The other needed Chase from Paw Patrol to appear above the camera.

No one was told to smile or look at me. I used low-demand play and declarative language. Sometimes that means changing the words. Sometimes it means fewer words altogether.

That way of working is informed by PDA-aware practice, but it can suit all kinds of children. Some are PDA or otherwise neurodivergent. Some aren’t. It’s simply the approach I used here, not a label for anyone in the photographs.

The laundromat didn’t need to pass as a family-photo location. There were bubbles, Paw Patrol and plenty of things to climb on.

We took the kids to the Harry Potter lights in the park.

It was incredibly cold, and my 6yr old didn’t want to go. But the effort turned into reward… once we were there, he absolutely loved it.

Along the path, I noticed a heart in the lights on the ground.

Whenever my 6 yr old sees a heart, he says it reminds him of me (although he also enjoys telling me he doesn’t love me, always with a cheeky grin).

So I pointed to it and said, “Look! I found a heart, and it made me think of you.”

We met Cornish pixies and I made a joke about my kids perhaps being Cornish pixies which made a lady behind me loose it laughing… motherhood right?! I’m sure you all can relate 🤣

We cast spells at the interactive displays and avoided buying the $100 gift-shop wands. My 6 yr old and I found sticks instead. He briefly wanted an entire branch, but we agreed that small things can be just as powerful as big things and are considerably easier to wave around.

I love these photographs because they’re cinematic, moody and different. They aren’t technically perfect and they’re super grainy having been shot in the dark.

But, I love them because they hold the details we’ll forget: the heart on the ground, the ridiculous branch, the cold, and the way reluctance turned into wonder.

That’s what photographs give us. A way back.

One museum. Three kids. Three completely different things they could get lost in for hours.

One of my kids will make a beeline for the dinosaurs. Run across that floor and footprints appear under your feet. Another heads straight for the moon and the planets. The eldest wants every animal, every tank, every creature she can find.

Ours family is a neurodivergent mix, so special interests aren’t a quirk here. They’re just how we’re all wired. And you end up learning right alongside each other. The dinosaurs I’m still catching up on because I can’t ever truely remember the names. Space though, I’m a bit of a nerd for that myself. The science of it draws me in and staring up at the stars helps keep me grounded whilst also filling me with wonder. So when one of my kids took an interest in it too we shared this together.

I’m curious by nature, and I can’t help but get excited to learn something new. I’ve learnt that my curiosity can be a blessing and I’ll happily jump into researching some specific thing your kid is into. Why? Because I don’t ask a kid to step into my world and perform. I step into theirs first. If your kid is deep in trains, or bugs, or one very specific cartoon character, tell me before we shoot and I’ll learn enough to actually talk about it. A kid who feels like you get their world relaxes. They feel seen, they feel important, they feel safer and they let their guards down enough to be themselves. Thats when I can do my best work.

Regardless if a person or kiddo is loud, quiet, or more interested in the ants than me, they all belong in front of my camera in a way they feel comfortable and completely themselves.

This is Cosmo. He’s been here about a month now. Yes, he is very, very cute.

Everyone keeps asking what kind of dog he is.

“A Cobberdog,” I say.

“A what?” they say.

So I explain.

It’s an Australian breed. We were looking for a pup who was calm, people-focused, trainable and the right temperament for our family. From everything we’d read, the Australian Cobberdog seemed to fit what we were looking for. The breed might not be the right fit for everyone, but for us, it just felt right.

Getting a dog wasn’t a small decision for us. We’ve got three kids, all neurodivergent. There was a lot to think about, including whether the dog would suit our family and whether we as a family would suit the dog. If we were going to do this, we needed to do it with our eyes wide open and a plan in place.

Cosmo came earlier than we’d planned.
But, somehow, it was exactly the right time.

Small person. Enormous moment.

Pregnancy doesn’t make the world stop.

But sometimes, on the right evening, everything feels a little quieter.

A moon above the water.
Bare feet in the sand.
A few minutes of not needing to perform for anyone.

If you’ve been putting maternity photos off because you don’t want to pose and pout for an hour, you don’t have to.

We can just walk.

Broome, a couple of winters ago.

Red rock in one frame.
Turquoise water in the next.

It really does look like that, even in the middle of winter.

I don’t always take the proper camera out on holidays. Sometimes I’m carrying snacks, towels, someone’s shoes, and whatever rock/shell/treasure has been declared important.

But the eye doesn’t really switch off.

A colour stops me.
A bit of light pulls me sideways.
A shape in the rocks makes me forget what I was saying.

Same eye, on or off the clock.

Still noticing. Always.
