One of the comb-footed spiders. Maybe.

Found hanging around looking very lovely whilst out on a night-stalk in the Daintree back in 2025. I've been meaning to share for a while, and here it is.

I just liked the part colourful, part translucent abdomen, and fine, delicate legs on this one.

* Comb-footed Spider species (happy to be corrected)

Tiny Hopper

There's nothing like finding a species of one of your favourite insects that you haven't seen before, and this was one of those occasions.

So tiny I had to take a photograph just so I could zoom in and check what I was looking at, this little one is about 3.5-4mm long and was hiding in plain sight on a branch in the vegetation at the wonderful Daintree Discovery Centre.

Like many treehoppers, this one has an enlongated pronotum (hardened plate-like structure typically covering the first part of the thorax) which extends over the back, but also forward, forming a small horn at each side of the head.

World Bee Day

Bees are essential pollinators, playing an important role in pollinating not only our native plants, but also many of our food plants. Without them our food security, diversity and ecosystem health are at risk.

They are under threat however (as much of our wildlife is), with habitat destruction, intensive farming practices, pests and diseases driving a decline in both the number and diversity of our native bees. There are ways we can help though πŸ™πŸ»: https://www.aussiebee.com.au/savebees.html

A Lesson In Patience

Macro photography is usually a lesson in patience as things rarely want to sit still, or to sit where it is easy to photograph them, and this wasp was determined to do both of those things.

On the move constantly, it was on top of the plant, behind the plant, moving inbetween parts of the plant, on the next plant and on it went. I might have huffed and puffed a bit, and I might have been ready to leave it and try and find something else, but as if it knew, it suddenly paused and let me take a few shots.

I thanked it for finally letting me enjoy the way the colours coordinated with the plant, for letting me take its photo, and then we parted ways, the wasp to get on with its busy day, and me to lie down in a dark room πŸ˜‚

A few quick edits from a little fungi quest...

Cam Blake Photography and I have just finished co-hosting two macro workshops at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. Great fun, even if the weather did throw a bit of water at us from time to time. The focus here was on fungi, mosses, lichens and so on - and there were plenty of small things around to photograph πŸ˜€πŸ„β€πŸŸ«πŸŒ§οΈβ„οΈ

Melaleuca Airstrip.

I've just got back from a photo workshop in the South West Tasmania wilderness. Somewhere where the only way in is by light aircraft, boat or a multi-day hike. Somewhere were there are no roads, no shops, no phone signal and very few people.

Somewhere that is amongst my most favourite places.

Blog post to follow.
