Augusta storm chase!

Yesterday afternoon, I made a last-minute decision to head out to Augusta for some developing thunderstorms. The trip proved worthwhile as I was rewarded with some incredible blue hour lightning bolts.

Right place right time!

Yesterday evening as storms developed in Perth's wheat belt region my friend and I decided to head out, as we got going, we noticed some rapidly developing cells to the north of Perth, we then made the call to divert to a lookout in the area and it was for sure the right call!

It's very tricky to capture daytime lighting without a trigger so I'm stocked with the results!

Boulder Rock and the Milky Way

Here in Perth, we are very lucky to be such a short drive out from suburbia to get to relatively dark skies to capture the night sky. Being one of the most isolated major cities in the world it only takes roughly a 1-2 hour drive to get away from all the light pollution. It's easy to take that for granted!

This photo is made up of 6 different images to reduce noise and enhance details.

Last night, I ventured out to Sugarloaf Rock in WA’s southwest for a bit of astrophotography. Didn’t expect much since it’s not the best time of year for it, but I was surprised to capture some incredible red and green airglow! It’s not visible to the naked eye, but the camera sensor picked it up beautifully.

Green airglow comes from oxygen atoms glowing about 90-100 km above Earth, while the red glow comes from higher up—around 150-300 km. Pretty wild what’s happening in our atmosphere, even when we can’t see it!
