I first saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was about 12 years old, and I’ve watched it every year since.
Which, in hindsight, probably explains a few things.
By my 17th birthday, I was committed enough to the cause that I threw a full Rocky Horror party. What I didn’t realise then was just how long its influence would stay with me.
It followed me into the events company I later owned. Into the worlds I liked to create. Into my photography. Into my fascination with pageantry, glamour, confidence, and people having the freedom to be a little more outrageous than they’re supposed to be.
Looking through my work now, the lineage seems almost embarrassingly obvious.
Rocky Horror showed me very early that being great doesn’t have to mean being serious. That humour and spectacle can sit alongside glamour and danger. That gender could be played with. And that being provocative didn’t require taking yourself terribly seriously.
And at the centre of all of that was Tim Curry.
Frank-N-Furter was outrageous, seductive, ridiculous, commanding and completely unapologetic. That performance left fingerprints all over popular culture and, as it turns out, quite a few over my own creative life.
So these photographs feel like the appropriate way for me to say goodbye.
Twelve-year-old me certainly didn’t understand everything he was watching.
But apparently he was taking notes.
Thank you for the influence, Tim. 🖤
