Last baby of the week, and an extra special one for me. Today a baby girl joins me in the studio, the newest little one in a family we adore through Mya, and I’m sharing a few frames from their maternity session by the ocean before she arrived.

Photographing them brought back such a rush of memories of my own chaotic early years with little ones, the noise, the constant movement, the sandy hands reaching for everything, and how quickly it all changes. Two boys and a little girl splashing through the shallows have now become two boys and two girls, and I feel so lucky to be trusted with this chapter.

Sometimes, the photographs look nothing like the moment felt.

And I think about that sometimes. If the session was chaotic, if there were tears, big feelings, siblings needing to be reminded to be nice to one another, shouldn’t the photographs reflect that, too?

But then I look at these little moments. The only kiss allowed. The one time one sibling reached out for the other. A fleeting touch, a moment of tenderness amongst everything else.

Not because the chaos wasn’t real, but because these little moments of love are real, too. They’re woven into the everyday reality of raising children, often so quietly that we miss them while we’re busy living it all.

And maybe that’s part of what makes these photographs so meaningful. Having another mumma beside you, someone who sees you, sees it all, and knows what you need to be reminded of on the hard days.

That the love was always there, even when everything else felt overwhelming. 🤍

Interrupting my usual feed, and brightening up what’s been a few grey and rainy days with a little joy.

Mine, film and our summers in Europe.

Four years doesn’t sound like a long time, but looking back at these images, it’s quite shocking to see how much they’ve all changed. How much they’ve grown. How different they look.

A little reminder of how quickly it all passes, and how glad you’ll be to have captured it.

Of all the photography I’ve done over the years, newborn photography is the one that asks you to slow down the most.

It doesn’t happen to your schedule. It has its own rhythm, its own pace, its own unfolding.

The little stretches, the pauses, the tiny fingers curling, the way a baby settles into their mother’s chest. Sometimes you wait. Sometimes you watch. Sometimes the most beautiful thing happens in the space between what you thought you were there to photograph.

I’ve learnt that you can’t rush these moments into existence. You have to be present enough to notice them.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about photographing newborns. It reminds me that not everything needs to be hurried. Some things are worth waiting for.

Newborn photography is about so much more than the pose.

It’s knowing how to create variety without constantly changing your setup. How to bring siblings into the photographs, work with different ages and personalities, recognise the moments worth waiting for, and know when to gently guide a family or simply let things unfold.

After 17 years of photographing families, these are the things that continue to shape the way I work. And they’re the things I want to share with you.

For my online newborn workshop, I’m opening up two real sessions, each with older siblings, and taking you behind the scenes of my approach - from the decisions I make while photographing, to culling, editing and bringing the finished work together through albums and wall art.

You’ll see the photographs, but more importantly, you’ll understand the thinking behind them. Both sessions will be recorded so you can revisit the teaching in your own time.
