Beanpole is released today. knows what's up, it's album of the week.
Georgia and I spoke alot about how these images wouldn't be; not polished, not beautiful (for the sake of beauty),
less a portrait of writer & player, and way more a still from the liminal world of Beanpole.
We sent stills from Natural Born Killers (1994), one from Blues Brothers (1980), some black and white photographs of a young Marco Pierre White & Joaquin Phoenix smoking in kitchens, and blue saturated, high contrasted Robert Patterson bleaching his hair by Jack Bridgland, not quite right.
We spoke about how these images needed to feel- like the temporary intimacies in Nan Goldin's The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, like the sparseness of Bill Henson's Untitled floating series, like the placeless narratives of the Untitled film stills from Cindy Sherman, like cluttered bedside tables & hotel bathrooms & train terminals, but mostly the temperature and the interstitial repetition of Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels (1995) & Chungking Express (1994) & In The Mood For Live (2000). (perfectly rendered in the Desire Videoclip made by Georgia, Marlon Williams, Tom Lynch & Martin Sagadin.)
Proud to have found a way there, with a musician whose work has moved me for years.
Congratulations on an album that really lives in between and right in.
