So, my family and I had a great time at the park this afternoon and because I'm the kind of person who turns a family arvo into a mini-shoot as my way of relaxing, here's some REALLY annoying truths I learned today:

💀 My kid HATES standing still
💀 She runs FAST
💀 She follows a prompt for all of 5 seconds only
💀 She loves photos
💀 But hates instruction
💀 My husband is reluctant to be in photos too

But what does ANY of this have to do with you?

Well, it means that I know EXACTLY what you're feeling!

It's so bloody annoying when you just want ONE, maybe TWO good photos, but no one wants to co-operate.

My solution? I had to get over myself, take my own advice and let my family just have...FUN. I had to run around after my kid and actually interact with her, the same way I would with clients.

It's a weird feeling, honestly.

But please believe me when I say that I know how it feels when you think the session has gone to crap. So thank GOODNESS the photos prove me wrong!

Okay mums, picture this:

You're 34 weeks
You feel HUGE
You absolutely do not feel like doing anything, let alone stepping in front of the camera
You do it anyway because you know you'll regret it if you don't
You start feeling nervous leading up to the shoot
You wonder if it's too late to back out now (which it is)
You start giving yourself every reason not to go through with it
You think "they're just photos, I'll do them at home instead" (which you'll probably forget)

The day of the shoot arrives and suddenly the clouds are DARK.
It starts SPITTING (NooOoOOOO)

We go ahead anyway - everything FEELS like it's going great...I just hope the photos turn out good.

And then all of a sudden...the photos come back and they're - WOWWWWW.

Because what do you MEAN I look that amazing? 😭

So if you've been on the fence but never been sure, take this as your sign to dive in 💕

You know your child better than anyone, but one thing I will NEVER recommend is forcing your little ones to hang in there or perform for one more photo!

If they're overtired, we're gonna need to give them a break or distraction until they feel ready again. I can promise you it will work in our favour if we follow their cues.

Let me be so real when I say I've been doing this for a few years but I STILL get nervous when I see other photographers in the same spot I'm shooting in.

Like, I start getting in my own head.

Are they judging me?
Are they judging my gear?
Are they judging the posing?
Are they judging the concept?
Are they going to ask ME to move?

My GAAHHHHHHHD.

But no. These two beautiful gentlemen offered for me to borrow their reflector, even held it up for me. They simply asked what we were shooting and thay it looked way more interesting than what they were doing.

And it reminded me about the whole importance of community over competition. I 100% get it when people DON'T want to share their tips and tricks. When you work hard, of course you'll wanna gatekeep your success. I get that!

But moments like make this industry worth it 🥹

I'm here to bust myths about what most people think when it comes to photos.

There's only two things that actually matter during the shoot - your experience and my direction.

How you're feeling is the most important thing to me, so if something feels a bit awkward, don't ever be afraid to tell me because I'll have another idea up my sleeve to help.

I quite literally always say that if you feel awkward, you'll look awkward. So your experience during the shoot and my direction throughout the session is what's going to make you look good ✌️
