This is Deb.
Two years ago I was lucky enough to be welcomed into Deb’s home to capture these precious moments between her and her orphaned wombats. When I arrived, Deb met me at the front gate. The first thing she showed me was some square wombat poo on top of some rocks. “They walk over things and pop on them all the time” she laughed, and off we went.
Watching as these little babies followed Deb around and trusted her as their new mum, quietly overwhelmed me in the best kind of way. I knew Deb’s story of kindness and loyalty needed to be told. I patiently waited and pitched her story to Galah. We waited some more and finally landed the pitch!
Today, you can purchase a copy of their most recent, and final Galah Magazine. I don’t think I could ever put into words what I witnessed and how this story made me feel. (There also aren’t enough characters allowed in an Instagram post). I hope these images bring you a little closer to how special this really was.
Of course, these babies are cute - I love wombats! But it was Deb who filled my belly full of warm, lovely memories. She is one of many wildlife carers who quietly and selflessly, pour their hearts and their time into these little creatures. The goal is not to be noticed, it is just to give back to these little animals.
