FALSE KILLER WHALES SHARE A TUNA!
This was an absolutely epic (albeit freezing cold) experience recently when I jumped into the ocean to film a baitball with Tuna.

We had spotted the pod of False Killer Whales hunting in the region and I was hoping they would come over to our boat like they did last year. (Its illegal to approach False Killer Whales and Dolphins within 50m in the water) so the only way for a close encounter here is that they come to you.

I eventually got lucky with some of the Pod coming over, as you can see visibility wasnt great and there is a lot of little critters in the water (this is what the Tuna were eating). The video is zoomed in but you can see one of the largest members of the Pod dive down to meet the other 4-5 who were celebrating with their catch of a single Tuna.

Did you know that False Killer Whales are highly social mammals that share their catch with other members of the pod?

How epic is this!

I'm certain this is the same pod that interacted with us last year, the baby since then has grown nicely. One of the largest ones had a boat strike on its back. πŸ˜₯ A great reminder to watch our speed when we are boating in these waters.

This is not the first time Ive jumped into the ocean in the middle of nowhere, in a bikini, in Winter! To get "the shot" (And likely not the last)!

So the question is...did I get the shot?

We helped this beauty cross the road safely this morning. Look at how they lift their legs inward to move swiftly through the forest floor like a snake does. Very cool. πŸ’™ Blue Tongue Lizard.

I've seen this behaviour a few times now, where Dolphins form a ring around a particular Dolphin and then push them or keep them at the surface. I wonder what the behaviour signifies - keen to hear from any Cetacean experts on this one!

Looking forward to planting Koala food trees soon! πŸ¨πŸΎπŸ’š Cant wait for this community event.

Come along and help us plant the next generation of koala food trees for Minjerribah!

https://www.mwvcf.org.au/whats-on/koala-food-free-planting-day

This community planting day is a collaboration between Minjerribah Wildlife Veterinary and Conservation Foundation (MWVCF) and QYAC, supporting the long-term care and rehabilitation of koalas at the Straddie Vet Koala and Wildlife Triage and Rehabilitation Centre.

The trees planted will eventually provide a sustainable source of native fodder for koalas in care while they recover and prepare for release.

It takes time! These trees will need several years to grow before they are ready to harvest, so every tree we plant today is an investment in the future of koala care on Minjerribah.

Proudly Supported by:
Sibelco, Gourmet Gumleaves Project, QTFN, Quandamooka Festival
Come along, get your hands dirty and help us grow a future food source for Minjerribah’s koalas.
