It was hard work out there swimming yesterday morning. But it’s all worth it when you get a sequence like this.

doing his thing. I love how the light changes from direct sun with flares on the lens, to a hard silhouette as it ducks behind the wave. Heaps of energy and movement in it.

Drone long exposure… yeh or nah?

Well I had to experiment and find out. My answer… maybe??

I knew there were two viable options (or more… let me know!!). Traditional ND method VS image stacking - which I know is kinda cheating.

My first attempt at some long exposure shots of Terrigal boardwalk were genuinely pretty good. But the wind was super low that morning and it was optimal conditions. Not soo much swell etc.

This afternoon I had a crack at North Avoca and the south swell had arrived. It was smashing against the rocks at the north end and I thought it could looks good in a stacked image. It created a pretty cool effect, but I think all the blended white wash is a bit distracting and all a bit much in this particular image.

So what’s the verdict? Jury is still out. I think conditions play a really big part in the result. Like always, the swell, sun, wind and location all play a part. I’ll be continuing to try this method out.

The last key thing is actually how I took the photos. I just manually hit the shutter about every second. As fast as it would write to the card. Potentially a 3 or 5 image burst could render a better result too. Less movement between the blended frames.

This is pretty niche if you’ve made it this far - but I had fun haha.

The best camera is the one you have on you.

For once I listened to my own advice. And honestly the sky this morning was just too good to ignore. Both these were shot on my iPhone. A quick snap as Alice and I headed over to the Haven from Terrigal with a coffee to see if we could spot some whales. They were definitely out there. I’ll be back with a couple of full drone batteries to chase them another morning!

My pro tip for shooting on iPhone. Flick it onto RAW mode. Edit in Lightroom iPhone app. The masking is crazy good and useful and can load presets from your desktop LR 🤙🏻🤙🏻

For photographers… the hunt is half the fun. Sometime more than half!

They say a picture paints a thousand words… but the memory of how you made it also counts. Shooting surf and the ocean means there are MANY factors outside your control… so there’s elements of planning. Tides. Swell. Wind. Sun. But there’s also elements of pure luck followed by joy in capturing a moment that seemingly might have been completely missed if you weren’t right there in that very moment.

Moments that you can feel.

This is why I take my camera in to the ocean. Battle the rip. Cop a few sets on the head. All to capture something that I can feel - something you’ll never get by just standing on the shore with a long lens.

Some of my favourite frames from yesterday’s quick little shoot at North Enny in the afternoon sun. Was nice to shoot with the sun behind me! ☀️

A few decent waves around. Copped a few right on the head!
