20 years ago today, the gold mine in Beaconsfield collapsed. Two weeks later, this is the moment when miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb were freed from their underground prison after 14 days trapped 1 kilometre down after a tunnel collapse. Their colleague Larry Knight died in the accident. I spent 12 days in Beaconsfield after it was discovered that these two men had been found alive, but in an incredibly dangerous situation. I was allocated the position of pool photographer for the world's media, who over the days had continued arriving in the tiny town with progressively bigger Winnebago's, satellite dishes, demands for half-strength decaf soy lattes and increasingly bigger step ladders to cover the story. At about 03:00 on May 9, 2006, I was woken by a call telling me that I needed to come immediately to the mine as the two freed miners were on their way up. This picture of Todd and Brant was taken at 05.58, May 9, 2006 as they walked unaided from the mine lift to the cheers of their fellow miners and rescuers.

30 years ago, David Viggers invited me to the Reuters office in Fleet St from my home at the time, Glasgow, Scotland. "Come down, and let's have a look at you" he said. He was in the process of assembling a national team of photographers for the Reuters News Pictures domestic service. I left London with a silver briefcase that contained a Leafax, a revolutionary way to scan and transmit photos over an analog phone line. So began my journey in news wire photography, which over many years took me all over the world, to document events both wonderful and terrible.
To say he was pivotal in my career is an understatement.
RIP Dave. I'll raise a glass of something dark, rich and red in your honour this week timed for your memorial.
My thoughts are with his wife Clare and all of his family.
