It was a Hanimex 110 format instamatic. I remember being at the beach with Dad. He explained a few photo basics and away I fired. Photos of the sand dunes, rock pools, water lapping the shore. We went to the chemist and dropped in the film to be processed. The next day we picked up the prints and looked over them. "This is not a photo, but, how about we cut it like this" Dad said. With a ruler he

cropped in on part of the frame, grabbed the scissors and started cutting. We cropped all the photos the same way turning what were photos of nothing, into frames with purpose and some kind of compositional balance. I still look for the frame within the frame and I am still just as excited about shooting as I was when I was 9.
