They're not usually the ones planning the session, picking the outfits, or worrying about the light. But they show up. They do exactly what they're told, exactly when they're told it, and somehow make it look effortless.

Working hard, showing up tired, putting everyone else first, again and again — that's not nothing. That's the quiet backbone of every family I photograph.

Here's what actually happens in the first five minutes of a session.

Truth is, I'm settling my own nerves too. While we talk, I'm already reading the light, thinking about colour, working out how to connect with the person in front of me.

No posing straight away. Just enough conversation to find the version of you that's easy to be around a camera.

By minute five, sometimes ten, most of that settles — for both of us. That's when the real session starts.

That's how I found out I'd lost my dad — eighteen years old, sitting at my grandparents' kitchen table, no warning at all.

It's not something I usually talk about. But it's a big part of why I care so much about getting families in front of the camera, all of you, together, before you assume there's always more time.

Some people arrive to a session convinced they're not photogenic. Not a photo person. That this was probably a mistake.
And then something shifts.

Watching that happen — watching someone see themselves the way I see them — has been the biggest surprise of my year. I knew I loved photography. I didn't realise how much I'd love this part.

There are things you put on a vision board not really believing they'll happen.

This year, one of them did.

A few weeks before, I'd had my own shoot done — and for the first time in a long time I knew exactly what it felt like to be on the other side of the camera. Nervous. Hopeful. Trusting someone else to see you. Even more so, photographer capturing photographer.

So when the opportunity came to photograph Doug from Twig and Olive. Someone whose work has stopped me mid-scroll for years, I put my hand up. Even though every part of me was super nervous.

And it was one of the best experiences of my year.

That feeling of showing up for a shoot and hoping it's going to be okay? I understand it more deeply now than I ever have. And I carry that into every single session.

Worried a rough week might ruin your session?

It won't. Babies don't need to be at their best for this to work, some of my favourite photos have come from unsettled little ones, because that's real life.

And if bub's genuinely unwell, we'll simply move your session to a day that suits them better. Just a quick message, no stress.
