Over the past few months, I've had the opportunity to explore and develop my photography as part of the Artist in Residence program at TAFE NSW - Newcastle Art School.

It's been a chance to experiment, challenge myself creatively and explore how light, form and identity can be expressed through portraiture.

I'm now preparing a selection of that work for our upcoming exhibition, where I'll be displaying photographs exploring different approaches to studio photography.

From dramatic black-and-white imagery to the use of colour and creative lighting, each photograph represents a different part of my creative journey.

I'm looking forward to seeing these images printed, framed and hanging in a gallery alongside the work of other artists from the program.

Passing Through

A few moments from a recent day wandering through Sydney with my camera.

I've been spending more time simply observing people and the spaces around them. People waiting, moving, working and passing through — brief moments where completely separate lives happen to share the same space.

That's becoming one of the things I enjoy most about street photography. There's no direction and no second take. You notice something, raise the camera, and sometimes you're lucky enough to capture the moment before it's gone.

These four images are a small collection from that day.

Having such an experienced model as ._model trust me to work with her in the studio is something I really value.

We spent two hours creating a range of different images, working through outfit changes, different setups and a few ideas that evolved naturally as the shoot went on.

One of the things I enjoyed most was being able to keep the lighting fairly simple and let Skye’s experience, movement and understanding of posing help shape the images. It gave me the chance to concentrate more on composition, light, shadow and the overall feel of each frame.

Shoots like this are a big part of why I enjoy studio portraiture so much. There’s always a plan going in, but some of the strongest images often come from the moments in between.

A huge thank you to Skye for the trust, professionalism and creativity she brought to the session, and to Imagine Studios for the use of the studio and giving me the space to bring the ideas together.

Transitioning out of the Air Force hasn’t been easy. It’s been just over two years, and for a long time I felt like I had lost a real sense of purpose.

There have been some incredibly difficult days. My body is carrying more pain than I’d like, and that has slowed me down in ways I never expected. But I still get up each day and keep trying to move forward.

This year, photography has become a big part of that.

It gives me routine. It gives me something to focus on. It gives me a reason to get out, create, learn and keep moving.

yesterday. sitting on the train home after a TAFE photography excursion, I found myself reflecting on how much has changed over the past couple of years.

I still don’t know exactly where photography will take me, and right now I’m not sure that really matters.

For the moment, the routine, purpose and direction it gives me is enough.

And I’ll keep trying.

To everyone who has followed along, supported my work, encouraged me, or simply taken the time to be part of this journey — thank you. It genuinely means a lot.

A little creative experimentation at Honeysuckle last night. 📸

Playing with flash, movement and a slower shutter to mix a sharp portrait with the colour and movement of the city lights behind.

Definitely a technique I’d like to experiment with more.

Everyone experiences the afternoon differently.

Some run.

Some ride.

Some simply enjoy being outdoors before the day comes to an end.

Street photography has a way of reminding us that every person has their own story, even if we only see them for a few seconds.

📸 World Photography Day – 19 August

Ever wondered why we celebrate photography on 19 August?

On this day in 1839, the daguerreotype photographic process was formally presented to the world in Paris. The French government made the process publicly available as a “gift to the world”, helping photography begin its incredible journey into the art form we know today.
From silver-coated plates to film, digital cameras and everything in between, photography continues to give us a way to capture moments, tell stories and preserve history.

A pretty good reason to pick up a camera. đź“·

To celebrate, share your favourite image you’ve captured this year in the comments below. I’d love to see it!

Not every photograph needs to show a face.

Sometimes the strongest stories come from watching someone quietly take in the view.

The late afternoon light, calm water and the iconic Nobbys Lighthouse created one of those peaceful moments that reminded me why I always carry a camera.

Timeless. Elegant. Classic.

There are some combinations that just seem made for black and white.

A beautiful bride, a classic convertible and a quiet moment amongst the trees. What really caught my eye with this image, though, was the reflection across the bonnet — almost creating a second portrait within the photograph.

For me, it's those little unexpected details that can turn a portrait into something more.
