What an absolute treat to stumble across this Bioluminescent algae bloom in Smiths Lake last week 😍

The algae has been seen at a few locations on the NSW coast, and with the recent opening of Smiths Lake to the ocean (done manually when the lake gets too full with rainwater), it also found its way into the lake.

Such an amazing experience, one I will not forget! Thanks for looking and as always, feel free to tag and share with family and friends.

August’s full moon against the Milky Way Starfield - 22 Aug 21.

Those that follow my work know that I love to take photos of the full moon. Under these current restrictions, I couldn’t get out and shoot it rising at sunset, so I waited until it was high in the sky and I set up in my front yard.

The moon is very bright so the camera settings required to shoot it mean you can’t pick up any stars. I had originally worked on this photo with that typical black background, and whilst it looked ok, I felt there was something missing…🤔

To fix that, I pulled up a Milky Way photo that I had taken a few weeks ago, and by processing that photo much darker than usual and only leaving pinpoints of light, I was able to combine the two photos and fill that vacant space.

I really like the result so thought I’d share with you all As always, feel free to tag and share with your family and friends.

Milky Way rising over Frothy Coffee Boatshed, Smiths Lake, NSW.

This shot was taken at Smiths Lake on Friday the 16th Jul 21. The moon was around 37% full, and whilst the best conditions to shoot the a Milky Way are when there is no moon, it can sometimes be to your advantage as the moonlight will help paint the scene with light.

That was the case here, and because the area is rated as Bortle 2 skies (Bortle 1 being the darkest), I was still able to capture plenty of detail in the Milky Way core whilst taking advantage of the ambient light (note: I also added some light in the foreground to balance the shot 💡).

Merewether Baths Sunrise - 14 Jul 21

When these cold frontal systems hit the coast at sunrise, it’s a sure bet that we are in for some pretty nice colour.

This morning was no exception, and whilst the golden glow as the sun breaches the horizon is always amazing, I love capturing the colour (given the right conditions), that occurs well before the sun comes up.

Depending on the height of the cloud, the timing of that colour can vary, and this morning the mid level cloud associated with that front glowed a beautiful maroon colour about 40 mins before sunrise.

Speaking of the colour maroon, I see that the maroon is overpowering the blue in this shot…. I hope it’s a sign that QLD finally get a win and we don’t let NSW kick our butts again 🤣

Taken from Warners Bay jetty looking North west towards Speers Point.
