⚡️⚡️Redhead Beach & Warners Bay⚡️⚡️
Check out these beautiful lightning crawlers I captured dancing over the iconic Redhead Beach Shark Tower yesterday!

The last shot was a little earlier at Warners Bay. Love the reflection on the still waters of Lake Macquarie ⚡️📸

Aurora Australis - Catherine Hill Bay NSW.
20 Jan 26 📸 10.37pm

After battling cloud for most of the night, I managed to grab a shot of the pillars as the Aurora peaked just after 10.30.

The blue beams were pretty cool, I hadn’t seen those during the previous Aurora events 🌌💙

Sunset storm over Newcastle ⚡️🌅
📍 Anzac Memorial Walk, Newcastle, 17 Oct 25.

Finally a decent lightning storm to kick this years season into gear. This is a stack of the many strikes that dropped as it came over the city. Check out the sunset glow below it, just beautiful 🌅

Throwback to Valentine’s Day 2024 ⚡️
📍Anzac Memorial Walk, Newcastle.

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming event (SSW) has shifted the usual start to spring here on the SE Coast, so we may not see scenes like this until later in October ⛈️

What is an SSW? It’s when temperatures high up in the stratosphere rise well above normal. At around 30 km up, temps usually sit between –40°C and –50°C, but during this event they spiked to about +4°C around the 22nd September. This warming has disrupted our weather patterns, bringing drier and warmer than average conditions.

Those upper air temps are cooling again (currently around –22°C), which means the Negative Indian Ocean Dipole (warmer waters off NW Australia), will become the main influence on our SE coast weather this summer, typically leading to wetter than average conditions.

It looks like a warm and sunny long weekend is on the way, so enjoy and safe travels if you have plans to get away ☀️

I’ll post the full-size version of this beautiful shelf cloud and spectacular lightning strike in the comments, let me know which version you like best by commenting “portrait” or “landscape”.

One of the best parts of scrolling back through a night’s shots is the hope of finding a little celestial surprise. This time, I was stoked to catch an orange fireball burning its way right through the middle of the 🇦🇺☄️

It’s subtle in this web file, but you can actually see three little bursts as it broke up in the atmosphere 💥

Thanks for looking and as always, feel free to tag and share with family and friends and don’t forget hit the follow button to see more from my adventures 🌌🌩️🌅🌇

Total Lunar Eclipse - Lake Macquarie. 08 Sep 25 🌕

It was tricky to shoot the eclipse this morning, there was mid level cloud that tracked across the sky for about 45 mins, so I had to wait and capture it when that cleared.

Unfortunately I missed the peak, but I managed to capture some shots just as the earths shadow started to move away.

This was taken at Warners Bay at 5am. I’d hoped to capture this scene in the one shot, but the moon was starting to get bright, so I took two exposures and merged them together.

Thanks for looking, as always, feel free to tag and share with family and friends.

Jupiter and Venus conjunction ✨
Stockton Breakwall 05.15 - 12 Aug 25

This mornings clear sky provided a great opportunity to capture this close conjunction of two of our Neighbors. With the Orion constellation providing a nice backdrop and a 92% Moon providing some natural light, I am really happy with how this turned out.

“Ol’ Blue” Tin City - Stockton Beach 🌌

Whilst out shooting the squatters huts at Tin City a couple of weeks ago, a couple of mates and I stumbled across this old tractor parked near one of the huts.

The Milky Way had already climbed quite high by the time we found it (9pm), but that provided an advantage, as the core was now well above the horizon and into the clearer atmosphere, allowing for some beautiful detail and colour to be captured in this single exposure.

Tin City is accessible to the public via beach access from Anna Bay or Williamtown (with beach permit), or via a 30-40m min walk over the dunes from a fire trail off Nelson Bay Road. Pack only the essentials if you walk in…those first dunes are a real thigh burner!

Best time of the year to shoot a rising Milky Way is May to July (evening), but you can also start to shoot as early as February before sunrise.

Aaron Sands and Mick Fortier Photography, awesome night legends, looking forward to our next adventure😎
