It’s that time of year again - when Ladybug tides could appear - one reported recently - here’s some information about them - and some pics I took for this article at Broughton.

🌊 DID YOU KNOW FINGAL ISLAND WASN'T ALWAYS AN ISLAND?

Next time you're looking towards the lighthouse at Fingal Island, take a moment to imagine something very different…

There was once a permanent sand spit connecting it to the mainland.

When the Point Stephens lighthouse first began operating in 1862, the area was known as False Bay and was notorious for shipping. In fact, 24 ships had already been wrecked in the area before the lighthouse began shining. ⚓

Then, in 1898, the great Maitland Gale struck.

The storm ripped away the sand spit that connected Point Stephens to the mainland at Fingal Bay.

And just like that, Point Stephens became an island.

The curious thing is that the connection hasn't disappeared completely. The sand spit is an intermittent landform — it can still appear and disappear depending on conditions and tides.

So when you're standing at Fingal Bay looking towards that magnificent lighthouse, you're looking at a landscape that has literally changed beneath people's feet.
