Wax Wings Photography

Wax Wings Photography Photos by a Sydney-sider Occasional photographer, mostly into landscape and travel photography. I also like rock and jazz music, dancing and great people.

I’m a born Sydney-sider and love my home town. I’ve seen a lot of the world, but it’s always exciting to come home.

COSMIC ENERGY

Picking your Milky Way locations at the last minute makes for a mad rush. This spot is quite accessible, but there's a campground nearby, so you must be careful to not disturb the sleepers

STAY GROUNDED

One of the reasons I haven't shot many nightscapes lately is the difficulty in finding interesting compositions. Sometimes a fresh location is enough, but sometimes you can add a subject to the foreground.

STAR COUNTRY

I made a commitment to do more nightscapes this year. When I looked back over the last few years, I realised I had let my Milky Way photography slide. A big part of that was the growing light pollution in the Sydney area, and boredom with repeating the same locations.

So this March, I headed west to check the back roads of country NSW for new dark sky compositions.

The Milky Way over Parkes Observatory (NSW)

I finally made my pilgrimage to The Dish. I don't know why it's taken 15 years of astrophotography to get there, when it's so accessible from Sydney. Glad I did! Next time, I hope I'll catch the core rising overhead.

The 64 m dish was one of several radio antennae used to receive live television images of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Its scientific contributions over the decades led the ABC to describe it as "the most successful scientific instrument ever built in Australia" after 40 years of operation. (Wikipedia)

IN MOTION

I'm not a star model, but I'm trying to experiment with my Milky Way photography. Lit by my iphone, my trusty Forester and I put in 1000km on this Milky Way chase.
